So I've had this boil for about a week now on my lower back just above my right butt cheek. I've been using drawing salve and that's supposed to cause it to pop but I can't take it anymore, is it safe to pop it myself?

I'm a firm believer of cutting unwanted things off my body. Recently (I'm 40) I started getting a few skin tags under my arms. They suggest freezing, tying with string to stop blood flow and waiting until they fall off, and various creams which probably don't work. None of these are anywhere near as satisfying as using my razor-sharp porcelain veggie knife.

I would, but I'm no expert. I'd definitely use peroxide afterward though. Then neosporin and a band-aid until it heals.

Just get a sharp blade, slice the fucking thing, and stop being a ***** about it. Oh, and don't listen to Tater, he has no clue what he's talking about. Neosporin on any sort of puncture wound or other deep cut is a bad idea as it seals up any sort of bacteria or whatnot inside, causing an infection (which is what you have already, no need to repeat...). You're actually better off keeping it as open as possible -- but covered in something that is air permeable -- so it dries and heals from the inside out.

So you suggest maybe covering with gauze? Should I apply anything on it? Also would using hydrogen peroxide after puncturing it be a wise idea?

Using peroxide on hydrophobic bacteria (oily) is pretty useless. Sure you can use the peroxide to clean the rest of the opening, but use alcohol to dry the infection out as much as possible beforehand.

Won't alcohol hurt? I was thinking of using the HP to pull all of the gunk out.

This may be a little off track considering the other responses, but how about going to an Urgent Care Clinic where a medical professional can do an I & D procedure, start appropriate antibiotics and provide you with some pain pills?

He will have to wait about 4 hours so all the people with the sniffles can see the doc first.
