If the Bears end up with the #1 overall pick - Caleb Williams or Drake Maye and why?

So, I am already starting to take a look at tape on both Williams and Maye. I just got a feeling that this whole situation is going to be a crash and burn with the Bears and we will be picking a new QB this spring.

If you have your choice of who you want between Williams and Maye, who do you want and why?

I think right now (its still early), I am actually leaning Maye.

I know Williams gets all the hype, and so I started there watching highlights, and being aware that all I am seeing is both players at their best (hence why I said it was early).

But I found some things interesting.

When watching Williams, he does have this dynamic, Mahommesian way of creating, but it seems like he's a lot like Fields, where most of his success comes when he breaks out of the pocket and gets to freelance. Plus, I don't know if it's just his team is so much better than Drakes, but he's always tossing to wide open wide receivers, at least so far. Another thing is he seems to be careless with the ball, like how Fields will run around with it in one hand looking to throw and gets it swatted away to cause a fumble. He just reminds me a lot of what we already have in Fields, and Justin's Ohio State tape.

So then I put on Drake Maye's 2022 highlight reel. He seems to have some wheels (not like Fields, but good enough), and can also create out of the pocket, but he also has some good tape where he hangs in the pocket and delivers a strike over the middle. He also has delivered some very precise balls in some very tight coverage on his wide receivers, something that is almost a requirement to succeed in the NFL.

So, while I reserve the right to change my mind, right now, Maye looks like the more appealing option to me.

What do the rest of you think? I don't watch college football, so clue me in on your thoughts.

I agree on Caleb. His WRs are wide open. He has a smaller frame. Lets see how this season progresses. Penix Jr is also a guy who is going to rise because of his NFL size.

Football fans need to get over the Mahomes type prototype at the QB position. He's a freak.

Adequate arm strength, understanding of football concepts, and vision in the pocket are really what matters. Who cares about wheels.

Personally I don’t want to draft another overrated white QB from UNC again.

Can we make sure there’s no Toyota Camry’s involved???!!!

Well, USC hasn't produced a good QB since Carson Palmer, which was 20 years ago. Ironically, Drake Maye has gotten compared to Carson Palmer.

I haven't watched either enough to really have a horse in the race. I just hope we actually hit for once, regardless of what happens.

It's the Bears so whoever we don't think is gonna be good, is gonna be the one to pick.

Yeah Williams likes to go off script, but I thibk he has way better feel for the position than Fields. Even still, the quality of some of these defenses he's went against in the Big 12, carrying over to the Pac gives me pause. I definitely don't see him as a surefire bet (So we should pick him).

None of these guys were a better prospect than fields.

Whoever they pick, odds are they will not turn him into a star.

Such a great name but if i went by bigger need then i'm going Chop Robinson (Penn St DE) over Kool-Aid.

He dropped to #11 in the draft. QB's that are great prospects don't drop to #11 in drafts. There were questions about Fields and if he can be good in the NFL.

I watched Williams a lot this weekend and yes he is a lot like Fields. He doesn't do well in the pocket when asked to. He's a very good athlete. I don't think he's an exceptional athlete like Fields.

I'll watch more of Williams this year and YouTube TV record some of Maye's games and go from there.
