the point is, why sign him to a 1 year deal at 10 million, 5 this year and 5 next year in a non contending year when the cubs will be going after pujols or fielder or another big FA. just no point to the signing. As I stated before there was rumors of him signing with the cubs i was scared to death that Kenny was going to sign Pena. CO says his BABIP wont be the same this year which may be true, but I highly doubt that when all the stats are used that he will be drastically better than last year.
Here are a few things I will say on Pena.
A) He has faced a lot of lefties.
He currently has 14 PA vs LHP accounting for just under 40% of his PA, for his career he only faces lefties 31% of the time. So hopefully that goes down a little, as he has a pretty big platoon split vs them, especially since he is only hitting .091 against them.
B) His OBP is still fine.
His OBP is .343 which isn't great but for a guy with a 185 BA its still pretty good. He is walking nearly 20% of the time.
C) The power isn't there yet.
He hasn't hit a HR yet, and we all know that's going to happen at some point, and my guess is when it does I think we will see a bunch.
Let's see him get some more swings in at least a month before we start judging. He is never going to win a batting title but he is still a career .240 hitter with a great eye. I still expect something like .220/.360/.500 out of him.
