4 goals a few times isn't way outside the natural flux of probability in random number runs.
I watched the Sharks vs Calgary last night, and the Sharks announcers were still talking about Darling being the best man on the ice just a few days ago.
I've been in this for Darling's trade value since the surge. I see no reason to let him walk for nothing at the end of the year, but recognize he is a valuable back-up we may need and would be screwed without if we faced the playoffs without Crow.
My take is really that if you think bluntly, we won't win a cup if Crow goes down. So that isn't a risk you are actually covering. His worth at the trade deadline, if Quick had a set back, or Price, etc...could be high...like 1st round pick or a cheap quality young forward high.
We need to always be finding value somewhere to keep this ship going, and so for me I take the chance Crow will be ok come playoffs, we can get by in other situations, and I do the deed. Its about cups, not about panic about god forbid your goalie goes down and you are done for. Well yeah...we would probably put up a good fight but go down riding Darling.
He has auditioned well for some teams. He has size, experience, and a .925 save percentage over extended minutes.
Hopefully a little rest does him good, he can learn from all this, make a few more quality starts before the deadline, and be our most movable asset at the deadline.
