What does Grossman have to do with Illinois football?

This info was merged from the Bears forum. After I mentioned Smith never a had a Qb at ILL. or in general. So the discussion veered off to his pro career. If someone has info on the Qb situation at ILL and Smith's total tenure there...please share.

Yep. It's not like it's a secret who the QB's have been at Illinois and how the transfer market served them well several times. It's not like Lovie has ever paid attention to the offense. The OC's were the ones who did the QB recruiting overall.

Sounds like it's Leipold getting hired. Rumored as early as Sunday

I heard it's Leipold too. Heard Bielema and Monken really wanted the job. Also heard Whitman went pretty hard after Fickell but pretty obviously there's no reason for Fickell to leave Cincinnati to come to UI.

The Fickell rumors aren't true. Just some garbage that got spun up on Illinois Loyalty or the 247 boards. No real reach out. Fickell is waiting for WAY bigger opps than Illinois.

He can coach but can he recruit to Illinois. I just don't think so.
I think he can. Midwest guy, I think he gets it. Illinois has some great in-state talent now. Just have to keep those kids home.

I don't think anyone really thought Fickell was a possibility except serious homers.

You have to swing and miss. If you aren't ever hearing "no", you aren't aiming high enough.

He does. And if Ianello comes with, he has solid connections to Illinois HS coaches, too.

Over the past ten years we have had a hillbilly coach who couldn't coach worth a shit and was a trainwreck in every way. (Remember, he ran into a ref during play more than once, and was flagged for tobacco use in game!)

We then went the polar opposite as far as respectability, but Lovie was married to an outdated scheme and wasn't committed to recruiting.

I don't expect miracles. I don't expect top players flocking to UI in the next couple years. But Leipold clearly can coach, and that is something we haven't seen in a long time. It's a big job to catch up to several other programs, but being able to actually coach at the college level is a good place to start.

Why do you think he can't?

He hasn't recruited all that well at Buffalo. And he just doesn't seem like the kind of guy that's going to get high school kids excited about coming to Champaign.

Well, That speaks even more highly to his coaching ability then I guess. I don’t expect him to start pulling kids down to Champaign that are otherwise going to Notre Dame or Ohio State but if he can get the kids that were otherwise going to go to Minnesota or Iowa it certainly will be a step in the right direction.

No one recruits well in the MAC. The top MAC team and the bottom MAC team are relatively close in recruit rankings because they are all drawing from a pool that really isn't well scouted. The difference between the 1700 ranked guy and the 2000 ranked guy isn't really a difference. But the guys he gets are either better players, or he develops them more, than most of his competition.

He just has to be a decent Big Ten recruiter.

No, it's 100% right. You're acting like I didn't talk to people at Illinois about this. There was a zero percent chance Fickell would come here. There were zero conversations with Fickell, or even his reps, about him taking the job. Whitman took the temperature of engaging and was told not to even bother. That somehow turned into the silliness you saw on MB's.
