Jewels to get a case of Squirt
Smart money on Leipold, he's the safest bet to have a decent floor and the program could really use that right now.

Jamey Chadwell is a risky play because he has no experience of any kind at a P5 and only a few years at the FBS level, but Coastal has been marginal for years and he's got them playing great. Unique offense, team just doesn't make mistakes, they play with confidence. Recruiting is the biggest question mark.

I don't think Malzahn would take it but I'd definitely call him. Lots of people are talking up Scheelhasse. I don't know if he's ready. Napier is going to probably go SEC. Clark Lea? Not a bad idea but would he come. No to Jim Leonardt, I don't think he'd come anyway.

To me, Leipold makes too much sense if he's interested, he's got midwestern roots and UI would probably increase his salary by 500%. At this stage in his career it would probably be tough to turn that down.

I'm kind of leaning Leipold or Lewis.

Congratulations on saying it would fail. My observation from fan message boards is that 95% of fans say everything will fail, so...congrats, I guess.
FT 2.0 is just 1.0. Nothing new to see there. BTW, I feel Liepold would be a very good hire. He has won at every level he has coached. I'll leave it up to Whitman to announce who it is. He may try to snag a bigger fish.

It is absolutely inconceivable to me that people think Illinois at this point should hire Scheelhaase.

He has no HC experience at any level. No experience as a coordinator at any level. No clue if he has any recruiting chops at all. Unlikely he has the connections to hire a top staff.

If he played at a school other than Illinois he would not possibly on the minds of the same fans who want to hire him. And that is the very last reason to hire a coach: "He played here".

Oddly, last time around, anyone wanting Kevin Sumlin was "dreaming", because there was no way he would consider Illinois. And now, I am hoping Illinois is not considering him.

He never wanted a quarterback

Why wouldn't a HC want a Qb? When Bill Belichick was HC in Cleveland, did he not want a Qb? If ya look around the NFL and college there are decent HC's that just don't have good Qb's. Is it cuz they don't want them?

Because Lovie didn’t give a shit about offense. Didn’t care to have a good o-line, didn’t care for a good QB and didn’t care for wide receivers either.

I'll admit, I didn't follow Ill. real close. I did say on several occasions was they didn't seem to have a Qb.
What I saw here with the Bears is him turning the offense over to the OC. And that's what most OC's prefer. What I did see here was a cycling through of various offense coaches to accommodate jay. So that shows somebody cared...right?
Smith always gave total support to Grossman. To a fault IMO. I still think it's amazing we got to a SB without a Qb in 2007

An argument could be made that the OC's and cutler failed Smith. Typically, ya work with what the GM gives ya. Lets
face it when have we ever had a good pass pro OL, even before Smith and after. I can remember one time 35yrs ago.
On wr's, at one point, Smith had Forte, Alshon Jeffery, Brandon Marshall and Bennett on offense....right?
So, I'm trying to understand specifically what did Smith say or do to make u feel he didn't want a good Qb or good offense?

I thought he would have been a better recruiter, to have Northwestern pass you up is intolerable with a school of 60,000 and moderate qualifications necessary. You should have every piece of the puzzle you could want.
How can a black former NFL coach known for defense not recruit an LSU/Alabama type defense?
I just would have expected him and Herm Edwards could have done better so I guess I don't understand the dynamics of college football or what attracts top parents/players to a program.

If I was a 5 star athlete parent and I saw Herm Edwards was coaching a team...it would take Nick Saban to change my course. You could have had Arizona weather and Herm Edwards mentoring your child. How do they not recruit a top 5 defense in all the land?

Lovie Smith is too honest of a man. If you want to be able to recruit like the likes of the SEC powerhouses you have to bribe kids with money and notoriety. You have to be dirty and constantly communicating with these HS kids. Also, college is turning into the NFL where everything revolves around a flashy offensive scheme. Good defenses are nonexistent these days.

Lovie should have retired 15 years ago. Organized football has passed him by

Nate has recruiting chops. Campbell is on record saying Nate is a star in the making. That said, he needs a OC gig first.

They aren’t. If Sumlin stays P5 level. it will be as OC.

Hearing Whitman does indeed have a bigger fish on the line. Will be very cool, if true.

I hope that's true. I won't kid myself into thinking Illinois is real attractive to top coaches, but I have seen ten or twelve names mentioned so far and I kind of think it won't be any of them.

But of the names mentioned, more than a few would be ok by me. Some I know almost nothing about.

I am not interested in a HC running the option right now, even if from Illinois, that much I can say.

It would be nice if we brought in a coach who knows that the forward pass is a legal play. I like that we ran the ball well under Rod Smith for the most part, and I hope we always have a good running game. But in today's college football, Illinois would get 200 yards passing on a good day. That has to change.
