I think people need to pump the brakes on Oakland selling. They are not a bad team and I think will be in it until the end. The offense is pretty gnarly for having not one superstar. They are full of speed and grinders and they get the job done. The bullpen is awful though.

I guess I've just learned not to predict what Billy Beane does at all. Sometimes he steps on the gas when you figure he's going to slam on the brakes. Still that's an awful lot of games to make up though. I realize they're only 6.5 games out of the WC but you're talking about leapfrogging 10 teams and as you point out the bullpen would have to improve a whole lot for even a reasonable chance. I still think they're sellers but what do I know?

If this was mid to late July I would agree, its going to be up to if Sonny Gray comes back because his next start is up in the air. They were 3 games over in June. That bullpen comes together at all they are not a team to sleep on but I get your premise and it could very well end up that way.

Haha Mets fans are nuts. They think Niese for Baez is going to happen. I forgot who was talking on ESPN but he said he doesn't see a deal being done at all. The Cubs hold Baez in the same regard as the Mets hold their young pitchers and they don't see either one budging.

I kinda disagree about baez .. i think they would move him knowing better what they have now in Russell and Bryant for the right piece in return.. he far from being untouchable

So noticed that Soler was hitting #2 tonight. Line up Alcantata, Soler, Schwarber, Olt. Made me think that they might translate that to Fowler, Soler, Rizzo, Bryant. Or back to the starting line up when Bryant first promoted. It makes sense at this point to Get Rizzo and Bryant into the traditional RBI spots.
Think that more to get him extra AB then anything. .
Maddon did start him out in 2 hole before he struggled..

I agree they need to drop rizzo n bryant down a spot to 3 n 4 but id prefer Soler bat in 5 or 6 hole and get a pure obp guy who can handle the bat in 2 hole. . That just my preference

@TommyBirch: #Cubs have signed right-handed pitcher Ben Rowen to a minor league contract and assigned him to Iowa. #MiLB #PCL

Guy got solid minor league numbers as a reliever ..
Not sure why he hasn't pitched more then the 8 innings last yr with rangers..

Don't look now but Jon Lester's numbers are pretty much right with his career averages so everyone that thinks the Cubs didn't get who they thought they were getting can stop now. 3.48 ERA, 3.31 FIP and 1.277 WHIP Vs career averages of 3.57, 3.57 and 1.276 respectively. He is who we thought he was.

Shouldn't it be better since he's pitching in the National League?

Probably but there have been other pitchers who have had a longer adjustment to the NL from the AL before particularly those that spent many years in the AL. All I was saying is this hand wringing about the signing being a bust is silly. Also Lester typically pitches very well in the second half so those numbers are likely to improve.

Are people saying the signing is a bust? Worst I heard is that Lester isn't living up to the dollars of his contract.

He has been off and on. The fact he pitched a strong game with Montero just signals he is ready to break with Ross. That alone should help with his results. Ross brings little to the O side.

They praised Ross last night with his leadership. The TV side said the two leaders in the clubhouse are Joe Maddon (odd answer) and David Ross.

Wouldn't surprise me if Ross retires, the cubs offer him a coaching job next year...

I had no idea he had such a damn phobia about it. He's in the wrong league to have that kind of problem...walks turn into doubles in a heartbeat. Other than that, I think it took him awhile to learn that you get strike calls on ankle high pitches these days.

He definitely has righted the ship so to speak, but he really does need to get over the mental block he has throwing to first. Being a lefty is a real advantage. He needs to overcome whatever the issue is in his head. He could be even better.

Every single expectation I've seen or heard from the Cubs brass, coming from those who have an ear for such things, is that Ross will play out his two year deal and be here in 2016. Schwarber is expected to be a part time catcher and likely 4-5 day a week LF next year and they want Ross to be there with him. That's not me saying that, that's coming from people who truly feel that's what the Cubs need to do next year. Of course Schwarber may stay down for a month and if he looks at least mediocre at C Montero could be traded by next year's deadline. It really is the only way to balance Schwarber's near ready bat and not quite ready catching, although scouts have said he's made remarkable progress behind the plate since he's been at AAA so all this could change. The fact remains that the team feels that the team feels that outside of Joe Maddon Ross is primarily responsible for the team's positive attitude and winning play. That's not reflected in BA or anything else but it is very baseball. The daily calls for Ross to go, something that won't happen for 15 months most likely, are really getting old.

Schwarber needs to learn from both of them, and I can't think of a better way for him to get at bats playing LF, while learning defense from two good catchers and spot starting. Always nice to know you have three catchers on the team too.

Pujols was all around the diamond before settling in......so.
