The Cubs got promising news on the injury front, as Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago reports (Twitter links). Backstop Miguel Montero has only a sprained left thumb, rather than something more serious, though he is still set to rest for two weeks before being evaluated again. And minor league infielder Javier Baez may appear in game action this week. That makes the high-upside prospect a more viable trade piece if the Cubs decide to pursue a significant upgrade.

So Montero started his rehab on Sunday. LaStella is in AA in his rehab. So who gets bumped? Maddon already said that he wants Schwarber's bat in there. So LF now becomes his. That puts catcher back at Montero/Ross. You would expect Hererra gone with LaStella back. But with Montero I'm thinking Szczur gets demoted again. He was brought up for the lefties on Pit.

I hope that the starters start getting 6 innings in every day soon. That way they can afford to drop a BP arm and get Baez in the mix.

Odd thing is they resigned Richard and added him to roster..

So now they have wood and richard as long relief

Grimm and Russell for 6th and 7th

Motte hunter and Strop for 7 and 8

Rondon closer

Ehh. I'm not mad at it. Richard can't do any worse than Soriano

CUBS' RAFAEL SORIANO TO 15-DAY DL
The Cubs RHP has right shoulder inflammation. LHP Clayton Richard, who was designated for assignment Monday and became a free agent, has joined the 25-man roster.

Not bad. Richard makes a good emergency starter now. Keep him on 5 day rotation for extended work.

Soriano was not dominate. Hunter on the other hand has been. I would mix him into the closer role.

Agree it will be Hererra and Szczur but would also like to see another bench guy and one less pitcher, (Richard?), especially if it's Baez.

Montero holds top priority. That bumps Coghlan out of LF. Now CSN thinks that Cog's goes to LF and Soler is on the outs. I think that is dumb as shit. They are not benching any of their future pieces. I think Coghlan becomes a super sub as he plays 2B and 3B. This bumps Herrera out of the 25 man. It is about creating playing time for Coghlan. Adding Schwarber will be a full time gig.

Szczur would be next as Denorfia and Coghlan would be taking up most of the OF playing time. That would open up a door for wither LaStella or Baez. I honestly think it will be LaStella but it should be Baez.

Looks like Castro has been relegated to the bench and Addison Russell is your everyday SS. Schwarber will be the LF starter. This team is trying to win above all other considerations right now.

Interesting turn of events. I don't really get how Castro has turned this bad.

Wow, I wasn't expecting that to be honest. Let's see how this line-up fairs!

He is not even close to the same player this year. He is lost and probably only a change of scenery would change that. He was a top 5 SS last year and earlier this season considered the next big SS to this. The mind is funny thing.

Also, how do you bat .330 in the first month and now couldn't even throw the ball for a hit. Its fucking weird.

Im reading that Maddon is playing the hot hands. Maddon didn't really say that Russell was his SS going forward. He could be. He wants Cogs to be like Zobrist.

I'd be curious to see the stats for how he has batted since the trade for Russell. I know he was hurt for the latter part of last season so it might not have a huge sample but I have to wonder if all these guys breathing down his neck has bothered him. Honestly, if I'm a fan of another team who has a crappy short stop I'd be hoping that team would find a way to buy Starlin low. I think a fresh scene would do wonders for him as you mentioned especially if he were to go to an established team where he didn't have to be "the guy" he's had to be as a cub.

I think Russell is getting a shot to stick there. I like Coghlan at the super-sub role to be honest, maybe even in 2016. People are still pining for Zobrist but if Coghlin shows an aptitude for being a Zobrist-lite a pennant race I don't see why they would sign the actual guy who's four years older and quite a bit more expensive. Bottom line is that development and value concerns for Castro are taking a backseat for a legitimate playoff push. I think think this is Maddon going to his bosses and saying "let me go for it".

Where are the people "pining for Zobrist"?

I don't we will see. He said Russell is at SS today. He could be there tom. Castro is batting .265 in the last 9 games. Seems like a strange time to bench him when he has actually shown life. I do believe he is playing the hot hand and Volglesong has given up 13 homers to left handers to only 2 to right handers. Lefties are hitting over 30 points higher against Volgs. He automatically has to play Ross because of Lester so I think its a combo of things and not a straight benching for the foreseeable future.

I see it daily on other sites, although I admit not as much here. It started last winter, then at the deadline and now people talking about signing him in the winter.
I was more than happy that the Cubs would possibly sign Zobrist last off-season. He's a fantastic person. They didn't. Life goes on. I don't see the need for him at this point of the season and I don't see the need for him moving forward. He'll be 35, IIRC.
