A sandwich. Refer to post #17
Oreos are sandwich cookies. That doesn't make them a sandwich.
noun
1.
two or more slices of bread or the like with a layer of meat, fish, cheese, etc., between each pair.
Here is some criteria, imo.
1. You must be able to pick it up and eat it with your hands and without your hands touching the fillings.
2. The fillings must be sandwiched between two discrete food items.
The 2nd one makes it tough for a Hot Dog, but a Hamburger is definitely a sandwich. That's just craziness.
The modern sandwich is named after Lord Sandwich, but the exact circumstances of its invention and original use are still the subject of debate. A rumour in a contemporaneous travel book called Tour to London by Pierre-Jean Grosley formed the popular myth that bread and meat sustained Lord Sandwich at the gambling table.[21] Lord Sandwich was a very conversant gambler, the story goes, and he did not take the time to have a meal during his long hours playing at the card table. Consequently, he would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread, a habit well known among his gambling friends. Other people, according to this account, began to order "the same as Sandwich!", and thus the "sandwich" was born.[22] The sober alternative to this account is provided by Sandwich's biographer N. A. M. Rodger, who suggests that Sandwich's commitments to the navy, to politics, and to the arts mean that the first sandwich was more likely to have been consumed at his work desk.
The original sandwich was a piece of salt beef between two slices of toasted bread.[23]
From this I gather that a hot dog only officially becomes a sandwich if the bun is split in 2.
Ok what if I put cheese between 2 slices of bread, then toast it in the toaster oven.... is it still a Grilled Cheese?
So this isn't a sandwich?
Lord Sandwich is turning in his grave.
How can something be grilled if there are no grill marks?
No, it has a name it's called a hot dog. A ham sandwich also has a name it called a ham sandwich, so it's a sandwich.
Sandwiches:
steak sandwich
reuben sandwich
sub sandwich
breakfast sandwich
grilled cheese sandwich
Not sandwiches:
Hamburger
Hot dog
Gyro
Slice of pizza
Edited to add: Taco
Things have names, respect the names.
His name is Robert Paulson.
What if I only have one of the end pieces left out of the loaf of bread? I throw a couple of pieces of turkey on it and fold over to waste nothing...that is no longer a turkey sandwich? From this I gather that a hot dog only officially becomes a sandwich if the bun is split in 2.

I suppose I should do what my ancestors did before me and let it go stale...then break it up into little pieces and toss in on the front lawn for the birds. That would make you a heathen.
Oreos are sandwich cookies. That doesn't make them a sandwich. It only describes the cookie type.
Only one way to know. Go to a restaurant that has both hot dogs and grilled cheese on the menu. Order a 'frankfurter sandwich' without any further clarification. Be persistent not to suggest any other term or agree to a different term. Then report back.
