I think one of the criteria for something being a sandwich is the bread.

Here is some criteria, imo.

1. You must be able to pick it up and eat it with your hands and without your hands touching the fillings.

2. The fillings must be sandwiched between two discrete food items.

The 2nd one makes it tough for a Hot Dog, but a Hamburger is definitely a sandwich. That's just craziness.

In reference to the second point, what about a sub (or hoagie or hero or whatever) in which the bread isn't split? That's definitely a sandwich.

From this I gather that a hot dog only officially becomes a sandwich if the bun is split in 2.

No, it has a name it's called a hot dog. A ham sandwich also has a name it called a ham sandwich, so it's a sandwich.

Saying a hamburger is not a sandwich is like saying a human is not a primate. And a hot dog is a more specific sub sandwich, so yeah, it's a sandwich.

What if I only have one of the end pieces left out of the loaf of bread? I throw a couple of pieces of turkey on it and fold over to waste nothing...that is no longer a turkey sandwich?

I suppose I should do what my ancestors did before me and let it go stale...then break it up into little pieces and toss in on the front lawn for the birds.

Oreos are sandwich cookies. That doesn't make them a sandwich. It only describes the cookie type.

Only one way to know. Go to a restaurant that has both hot dogs and grilled cheese on the menu. Order a 'frankfurter sandwich' without any further clarification. Be persistent not to suggest any other term or agree to a different term. Then report back.

I'd ask for a hot dog sub.
