With all the bullshit going on with jobs and no one being able to find anything..

Hell there are even McDonalds that are only hiring college graduates right now..

How can one normal person make a living and potentially raise a family down the road?

So..

Is this country the land of opportunity? or has it been overcome with greed?

My guess is that this question was also asked during the Great Depression.

LOL - slavery in the south, indentured servitude in the north, the chinese and the Irish building the railroads, white aristocratic landowners the only ones to vote for a long time, Jim Crow laws, the Gilded Age, robber barons, etc., etc., etc....

But you're right. America certainly has only recently become greedy.

Well ya, you can say that it has always been greedy, but in this age of equal rights, freedom of everybody, and mass communication, it CONTINUES to be. that is the real problem

What I mean to say is: Yeah, everybody has equal rights (although some might argue that), but that doesn't mean to say that greed would go away. As a matter of fact, many people would argue that greed is a good thing.

Prope, your posts intrigue me every time.

I don't think we've become greedy (because we have ALWAYS been greedy) but the problem is our standard of living is way too high. With the job crisis people would rather live off the government funding then actually get a paying job. People are this way because when they had a job they may have been getting paid. Somebody who got laid off making 20/hour isn't going to have the integrity to work at McDonalds for 7.50/hour. However even at 7.50/hour.....you would still be among the 12-15% RICHEST people in the world.

People don't realize it how good we have it, in comparison to other countries where people can work a full day of hard manual labor and MAYBE get 1 dollar for it.

Our standard of living is way too high. People can still strive to achieve the same things. I am happy I am not interested in frivolous spending, as long as I can pay my rent and have a roof over my head...I am happy. Too many people aren't able to feel that way because of the stupid shit they buy to get them in debt.

The world, our lives, this country, will never be free from greedy ass huge corporations that truly run everything behind the scenes. Im convinced our government is corrupt as hell.

See above post.

Equality =/= no more greed anymore than it doesn't equal initiative. Walmart does a great job at making medium sized companies (and even larger companies) bend to their will in order to space on the their shelves.

Stuff like that might force some people out of jobs, and a lot of people would call that greedy - but doesn't Walmart do a better service to the general public for being a cheaper option for most people?

I know that greed wont go away.
Perhaps I don't see how greed has benefited us recently...

Well perhaps you don't see it in every way. For instance, in the end - what is the ultimate goal for Sprint? I'd imagine it to be the #1 cellular provider in the world and to make as much money as possible doing so.

How do they do that? Through innovation. How can Verizon, Apple, T-Moble compete?? Through innovation.

Greed creates innovation, which creates jobs, which creates wealth for everybody.

Really? Like Prope pointed out, this nation was built on greed. In most times we have thrived off greed as well. We came out of the great depression strong and this dip in the economy will be survived as well, just give it time.

There are careers to be had you just need to get the needed education and training to fill the positions in need. I will agree it has become a lot harder for most people to choose a career based on what they want to do, these days you need to choose based on the need.

Some greed is good. It makes the nation thrive. Too much greed can ruin everything.

I think the cost of living is too high.. For some people their standards are just stupid..

But when you go to figure..

that 7.50 hourly wage can barely buy you some meat at the grocery store..

That's when you know we have problems.
