I'll have to look those albums up again and listen to them. Dark Side forward is usually what I listen to so it has been a while since I've listened to obscured by clouds or meddle. Although now looking at their discography Saucer full of Secrets was pretty good and I think that was Syd Barrett IIRC?
Division Bell was disappointing. It has a few good songs but kind of bordered on pop. I haven't listened to the new one either but have been told it sounds a lot like Division Bell.
Pretty sure the recording/tour of Saucer was the reason they got rid of Barrett (he was "part of the band" but vacant).
I like Division Bell. The thing is that it's an entirely Gilmour band by that point. It really doesn't differ all that much from the earlier Gilmour written material. I have a feeling you're just a Waters devotee (not that there is anything wrong with that [I, obviously, love his solo works.])
Edit: The tour Waters was on when Syd died was easily in my top 5 list of concerts I've ever attended; first set was the entirety of Dark Side and the second set was his solo shit (and he put together a great backing band).
Double edit: It's hard to say that "Coming back to life" wasn't a giant middle finger to Waters concerning his relationship with Barrett http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/pinkfloyd/comingbacktolife.html Those guys must have had one seriously fucked up relationship. Some random psychology grad should write a paper about those nutjobs.
