Think Hammel's injury is the real issue. I don't think he came back 100%. With the season having meaning they can't afford to let him not be there.
Hendricks they went over it. Mechanics issue. He has not been right at all this year. He needs to square up the plate more and he is rounding in his delivery. I believe that is an issue that will not resolve itself until the off season.
Haren performed better in Miami. But that is all park factor. Cubs park has seen wind blowing out more this time of year vs blowing in more earlier season. He is not going to have much success with his limited stuff. Anything up will get shelled.
That might be a key factor. Wind blowing out/in. Seems games were lower earlier season. Later season Cubs have been blowing up more. IE wind change. The bottom half for what ever reason is not able to contain the other team.
Today's win was massively important? Why you ask? Two things
1. With a win the Cubs cut kept the deficit under 3 games thus they control their own destiny
2. Today's win was their 10th win against the Pirates, clinching them the tie-breaker in case both teams tie for the Wild Card spot so now the Cubs don't have to beat Pittsburgh, just not lose (and then wear the other wife's dress).
Not buying #2. This is not hockey and there is no discernible competitive advantage to playing at home for a single elimination game. Over 162 games home vs. away splits can be telling, but not in a one game sample. None of these games really matter for the Cubs right now, other than getting guys healthy, getting guys out of slumps prior to the playoffs (even that is dubious), and building momentum (also dubious). I wasn't particularly upset that they failed to take 3/4 from the Phillies, and I'm not particularly excited that they took 3/4 from Pittsburgh. It's just a nice placebo until Oct 7th.
