We need someone who shuts the door, IMO. I'd be okay with Fernando Abad, but I'd hope that wouldn't be it.

You think we need a closer? Lol Rondon has been better than Chapman the past two years. Rondon sports a 1.66 ERA since 2015 which would be the third best closer ERA in the past two season.

I'm fucking mystified at this supposed need for a closer. The bullpen needs a better mix and a LOOGY is a must byeond that people need to chill the **** out. Welcome to baseball, bullpens are erratic and hard to build.

Probably poor use of baseball cliche. We aren't having trouble closing the door in the 8th and 9th innings. We are having issues with inherited runners in the 6th and 7th innings. We do need a LOOGY. But we also need another swing and miss candidate that can handle a full inning of duty before Strop and Rondon take it home. Sometimes you have to close the door on the game in the 6th or 7th when the SP is tanked. That's what I meant. No one is supplanting Rondon...but it doesn't mean we don't need someone with similar stuff to bridge it to him.

Chapman would be ideal at the right price. Say Johnson and Vogelbach and that would float.

My understanding is the Yanks will pull 2 deals. 1 for Chapman and the other for Miller. Chapman should go for less out of the two.

I don't disagree. I'm hoping Edwards is that guy.

I'm curious if the cubs try to land a younger starter candidate. I've floated the idea before but Drew Smyly strikes me as an interesting guy to use out of the bullpen this year with an eye toward starting soon. He has some stuff to work on if he wants to become a upper tier starter but his k and walk rates are so good. If they could use say Soler to lure him away from TB and then also pick up Abad or some other lefty specialist that would make the bull pen far more interesting.

In late/close games:

Most used=> ERA

Strop: 4.11
Rondon: 2.63
Wood: 1.50
Warren: 1.50
Grimm: 1.00
Cahill: 3.38

That is in those situations. As we can see Joe is for the most part sticking with Wood/Rondon/Strop as his go to guys. The rest have been pushed back. I don't even think Edwards has been put into any higher pressure situations yet

Interesting stuff here:

http://www.bleachernation.com/2016/...-schwarber-rumors-and-acquiring-bullpen-arms/

“It’s pretty rare that you rebuild a bullpen midseason through big-ticket items,” Epstein said, adding that last season’s model is far more typical and sustainable approach. Of course not every option will work out, but if you have a plan and the patience to cycle through a bunch of guys (as the Cubs appear to be doing now), you’ll often get rewarded in the end.
Epstein then added an interesting thought that, if you’re thinking/building a bullpen for the postseason, the thought process is entirely different. In the playoffs, you’re not looking for a solid 7-8 pitchers. Instead, you’re looking for the 3-4 guys you can lean on heavily in the biggest situations. As of now, the Cubs have two guys of this calibre, in my opinion – Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon – but from there, it’s wholly plausible that guys like Justin Grimm, Trevor Cahill and others can recapture their 2015 success and be that third guy. Or maybe someone like Carl Edwards Jr. takes a big step forward.

I would slide that bum Rondon down to middle relief and let the Twin Terrors (Peralta and Richard) slam down the 8th and 9th!

Seriously, we're in great shape with Rondon. We just need a lefty MRP. We'll be fine.

I believe the biggest issue is the 7th inning. It was key last night. As we see most starters are getting 6 in. The 7th is where the issues begin. We can expect Wood/Strop/Rondon to handle the 8-9 for the most part. What needs to happen is Grimm, Cahill to stabilize the 7th inning. I believe Edwards can handle it but I doubt Joe is just going to toss him into it yet. But he needs to take innings off these guys on games where the O explodes.

Didn't mention Wood. Who has been a solid 3rd man in the pen.

Wouldn't that be funny:

11. Rich Hill, SP, Athletics — While he’s still technically on the DL, Hill is set to be activated on Saturday. That said, he won’t reclaim his top-five status on this list until he has shown that he’s at full capacity. Though his groin injury isn’t particularly concerning, the larger injury history and stunning late-career rise will already give some teams pause. Still, the starter rental market is in shambles and he could yet be a prime deadline asset.

Time to dump Dishnet, if you're hellbent on having a service that loses service in bad weather than just get Direct tv. Satellite is good until you have some bad weather, **** that I moved on.
