Seems like the focus is lacking tonight.

Strikeouts and errors the story of this game. ..

Shields had a good Knuckle curve going. He mixed in a change to LH hitters. So he kept them off balance all night.

Hamel pitched better but the D was the story. Game should be 2-0 still.

Losing Sunday wasn't so bad, knowing the starter gave a good performance, because in the long run, as long as you get those, you'll be OK.

Tonight, it feels worse. Should be OK for same reasons, but it feels like after back to back good outings, losing both sucks.

Two errors did us in.

See that Coughlan homerun. It makes me question the two batters before him. Montero and Soler took mammoth cuts. I know its engrained in their approach but they need to understand their run does not matter. Get on base any way possible. I am not ripping on them cause almost all major leaguers do it. Its just kind of bugs me how they dont go about it different.

That is what has driven me nuts about the Cubs for years, and Soler needs to learn it. But I am seeing much better OBP from the team as a whole, and I am confident we'll see less of that from most guys. But even in middle innings, I wish Soler and Baez would realize they don't need to try and hit it 500 feet in order to get a HR. And they don't always need to get a HR.

Back-to-back A+ starts for Hammel, and props to him for lowering his ERA to 2.70. He is settling in nicely in the 3-slot of the rotation.

Even though Shields opted to stay on the West Coast instead of joining the Cubs, it bodes well that the brass thought to try and bring a pitcher like him in. The deadline will be interesting, since I figure they will bring some sort of pitching help in. Who is the question.

There will be teams that will be bucking the Cubs, and the Cardinals will be one of them, though they will probably be inclined to get a rental. Maybe the Cubs will too.

You will be hearing a lot of Aaron Harang rumors for both of these teams.

The Cardinals have been scouting Hamels heavily as have the Cubs unless you believe the Cubs true target is Papelbon (I don't). If I had to guess the Cubs feel that if St. Louis starts making real offers for Hamels they may have to get involved and they could offer a better package. I don't see the Cubs going for a rental this year, but I've been wrong before.

I didn't see last's game but just got done watching the highlights and that was a tough loss. San Diego is a team that is starting to figure things out though so these are not easy games. Still 2 of 3 was a reasonable expectation and now that's going to be tough. Let's hope Wada can fool some people and maybe get into the 6th.

I think people will be disappointed with the Cubs at the deadline. Unless, they find a player that fits their future plans. The Cubs are not going to sell out to make a run. They will trade for someone, but not the big splash people want. They arent going to give up a big prospect for a 2month rental. Just my opinion. I just dont see them selling out like Beane did last year. I think they will make small moves to help unless they can find a young starting pitching.

^^^this.

Sustained success is what they want. There is no need to panic and trade away too much for a pitcher this season.

I agree although, and believe me I'm not one to push for this quite the opposite actually, I do think they would look at Hamels if the cost came down and if they were trying to keep him out of St. Louis. He's not a rental, you're talking 4 1/2 years (including the option) left on what is now a reasonable contract and he'd be a cheaper version of the might be able to buy in the offseason. With that most unlikely exception, I think they're after a young pitcher and I think one of the Mets prospects would be a decent bet at some point. maybe not even until the offseason. No rentals though, that would seem to be counter intuitive.

Yep. I haven't wanted them to go after Hamels because the asking price is way too much. If the Phillies GM becomes more reasonable, it's worth a serious look.

I would be cautious with Hamels. He is 31and logged a lot of innings for the Phils. I have watched him a decent amount this year and he has not been great. His ERA is good but his peripherals are high and his walks are up. No doubt he is a good pitcher, but I get leary of two 31 year old lefties with the amount of innings him and Lester have logged. You are looking around taking on 80 million dollars for him.

It's actually more than that since he will likely adjust his approved clubs list to reflect this year's suitors and therefore force the trading team to exercise the option for the fifth year. It would have been $110 million at the beginning of the season so what? $90-$95? He's not my first choice by any means for the reasons you state. Would they get involved to try to block St. Louis though if the race is close in July? Maybe.

It would be his remaining salary this year. 23 and half mill for 3 years and a 20 million team option. So, you are correct if they have to pick up the option.
