That's seems to be the issue with Strop as well. It does really piss you off though when a reliever gives up multiple runs in close games.

There is something off about him this year. I personally believe with hitters attacking lowballs Strop's 2 seam is a sucker pitch this year. IMO it is still his fault for not going up in the zone. Hendricks has gone up in the zone and increased his 4 seam usage and is getting high strikes called this year. And he throws 8 MPH slower than Strop does. So it is really Stop's inability to adapt that is his lacking.

IMO He should use his rehab to scrap his 2 and start attacking the upper part of the plate with a 4. Keep the slider as it keeps hitters from going dead fastball.

Well, I do think he was hurt, but even in years past, when he gave up runs, he'd usually give up multiples. Those tend to stick out, so people start to think the pitcher is worse than they are.

It sucks when up 4 to see a guy give up multiples. But in some games - say you're down a couple, giving up a bunch and losing by 5 or 6 instead of 2 doesn't hurt necessarily.

Obviously it sucks at the time and takes you out of the game, but doesn't lose it, per se.

But I assume getting rocked infrequently is tired arm or not "having your stuff".

It's the guy who always gets hit or always walks batters that really gets me frustrated.

That is a excuse. The core problem is his 2 falls into the swing path. ESPN was talking about it today and how the A's have been going up in the zone more and getting success. Umpires get reviews every game on the job they do and most of their missed calls were on high fastballs that were strikes and they were calling balls. Now they are adapting and calling the high strike again.

So it wouldn't shock me if it's Maples. The same thing with him as always - walks hurt him a lot but he's seemingly been ok with Iowa since he was sent down

10 appearances
2 were awul (1 out each time - 1H/4BB and 2H/4BB)
Other 8 appearances

12 innings
6 hits
4 BB
21 strikeouts

Considering how many injuries Azolay has fought through, I just can't see them wanting to change his throwing schedule at this point of the season.

There is some history though, Cardinals using Carpenter, Braves using Smoltz, Cardinals using Martinez now.
Joe wants the name though, takes 5 good outings to make the circle of trust and one bad one to never be heard from again.
I still think Chatwood is doing well enough to take over, especially now that they got the lefty for long relief and spot starts.

Still want to see Underwood get used at least once too. one appearance in 2018, 4 innings only 1 earned run and 3 k's and he was never heard from again.

I'm guessing so.

As far as stuff is concerned he has the most diverse arsonal. His issue is he can lose the plate. But when he is on he is better than most options out of the pen.

I'm not against it based off of stuff. But he would have a short leash because that ride can bottom out.

Like I said. Right now I would lean on Chatwood, Wick and promote Alozay. All 3 can hit 96+ so you know that you have velocity working in your favor. Chatwood and Albert also have good off speed so can be used in a inning or more.

Ryan would be a good mix in guy when a left handed heavy inning comes up. Him later inning and Holland earlier inning.

Underwood should be used in mop up and long stints.

So that is my opinion. With the rotation healthy you can expect 6 innings on avg from them. Darvish can build up counts fast so having a 2 inning arm slotted for that day is smart.

Basically if Kintzler goes down.

Underwood as mop up multi inning
Cishek as the bridge to the 7th.

Holland as early LOOGY (6-7th inning)
Ryan as later LOOGY (8-9th inning)

Wick primary 7th
Alozay primary 8th
Chatwood primary 9th

That leaves Phelps. I would use him in different roles to give a off day for a over used primary role pitcher.

I kinda had the feeling that it would end up a platoon between Schwarber and Almora.

Nick has pretty much been lightning in a bottle for this team and the group has been feeding off of it this home stand.

Theo better open up his offersheet for him. He deserves a strong offer.

I never thought he would platoon. He played in a hitter friendly ball park around a shit lineup. His home run numbers should go up playing in Wrigley in the hot months.

He was brought in to start. Schwarbs splits against lefties is just bad, but he has a .985 OPS after the all star break and has been real good since Nick joined the team and he has stayed down in the lineup. Sucks Willy is out, but Victor can swing the bat. Add in Zobrist when he comes back and this lineup is really lengthened and a tough one.

I’d put even just a hard AB working Zo and the lineup is crazy deep

Zobrist
Castellanos
Bryant
Rizzo
Baez
Contreras
Schwarber/Almora
Heyward

That’s legit all around.

Joe Panik DFA'd today. I know we need relievers but should we consider picking him up?
