Just throwing this out there..

As Russell approaches 100 AB and we enter May and he continues to hit near .200 with as many or more Ks then hits..

Would they consider benching him for Baez or even send him down til he gets back into a groove.

I hope he breaks out soon but it possible he may just need a wake up call for lack of a better saying as some 2nd year players need to get out of his funk

Some may act "offended" by your question but it's a legitimate one. The guy has not shown he can consistently hit. Side note: can't believe Russell didn't make that play.

Sucks that they scored there. Tailor made double play Russell booted.

Is Lackey getting squeezed in this game? I'll bet that conversation at home was about exactly that. It's like these umpires need to have catchers that frame well before they can call a game properly. This new catcher the Cubs have isn't doing Lackey any favors back there.

I get what you're saying..
I think the kid will eventually hit, but how long do they wait to see if/til he breaks out of it.

Soler could have taken that route to the fly ball.

I think you're selling Russell a little short here. He has cut his K rate from 28.5 in 2015 to 16.5 so far this year while raising his BB rate from 8.0 to a fantastic 15.3. His BA is down but he also has a BABIP of .236 which is probably .075-.100 lower than you would expect indicating that his BA is low as much due to luck as anything else. Oh and he's a .5 fWAR player after 23 games. He started the day with a .686 OPS and as long he keeps it close to .700 he's going to stay right where he is.

Luck or no Luck the kid is struggling so far..

He down to .203, he has 3 hits in last 24 AB with 10 Ks now

You can show all these special stats, but bottom line
he not producing now

Russell may have the best swing on the team, dont know why that doesnt translate to better average

Let's all throw in a buck and predict when Heyward will actually get his first hit of 2016.

If he doesn't get one, we can donate the $ to Cubs Care.

Someone actually believes the Cubs will take a terrific defensive SS and send him to the minors. On a team leading baseball in run differential, we want to sacrifice defense for offense.

Smart.

Oh, his error will cost us the game today, so someone please reply that he is not good defensively.

Haha as predicted someone got offended by Chibears55 question about Russell. Clearly, the guy is struggling to hit. That shouldn't be debated. I wouldn't send him to the minors but I'm not going to blame bad luck and ignore reality. I hope he improves but in the mean time I would give some starts at SS to Baez.

Every single meaningful offensive stat shows improvement from last year except BA and SLG and the BABIP of .236 is due for a massive correction. Fowler's BAPIP was simarly low last year and corrected itself. Basically if Russell maintains his new, more disciplined plate approach he will hit.

Do you understand BABIP? His is ridiculously low which means, stated simply, that many of his balls in play likely should have been hits. A regression to the mean is inevitable.

This clown's strike zone has been all over the place today.
