Someone actually believes the Cubs will take a terrific defensive SS and send him to the minors. On a team leading baseball in run differential, we want to sacrifice defense for offense.

There been a ton of 2nd yr players that got sent down to find their stroke and eventually returned like last year MVP Harper.

It not like he struggling at .240 or .250 , he hitting.200
Eventually he gotta do more then play good defense, Baez can play good defense and be more productive with bat

Every single meaningful offensive stat shows improvement from last year except BA and SLG and the BABIP of .236 is due for a massive correction. Fowler's BAPIP was simarly low last year and corrected itself. Basically if Russell maintains his new, more disciplined plate approach he will hit.

Bottom line, until he hits and batting average rises
All those other offensive improvements means nothing if he continues to struggle with a .200 BA..

Of course a big 9th inning game tying hit always helps ?

I think you're selling Russell a little short here. He has cut his K rate from 28.5 in 2015 to 16.5 so far this year while raising his BB rate from 8.0 to a fantastic 15.3. His BA is down but he also has a BABIP of .236 which is probably .075-.100 lower than you would expect indicating that his BA is low as much due to luck as anything else. Oh and he's a .5 fWAR player after 23 games. He started the day with a .686 OPS and as long he keeps it close to .700 he's going to stay right where he is.

Baez is a .5 fWAR player after 11 games! :cutecat:

You need to get hits to be productive over the course of the season..

If he still hitting between .200 and .220 come June 1st are we still relying on how good he looks at the plate

Frustrating game. Players win and lose games. Not umps/officials/refs. But that being said, the ump was fucking terrible all day. If you are going to make up your own strike zone at least be consistent and stick to it the whole game.
