Just made no sense when you are going for a series win and you push back arguably your best pitcher over the past 12 starts. Would they have pushed back Arietta or Lester when they had til Tuesday to call this guy up? Was it national TV and them thinking every executive in baseball was going to watch the game and offer something to trade him for? Is the Marlin series going to be such a statement series that they want to not give up a game to this goof?
One, the Cubs as an organization don't care about individual games as much as the fans do. That's just the truth.
Two, the idea was to give your starters breaks so that guys like Jake, Hammel, and Hendricks aren't running on fumes in mid October. You don't wait until your pitchers are tired to rest them, you rest them now. It also means they're less likely to suffer from an injury due to fatigue.
Three, I highly doubt the Cubs thought a guy brought off the scrap heap was going to have much value (if any). I think they were just trying to save their starters a start.
