Unbelievable. James Shield's and his 5.00 ERA is destroying us. Hendricks did his job - 2 runs in 6 innings. Our offense sucks yet again.

Factor out those four bad starts and his era is right around 3.00

Watching these last 2 games makes you wonder who the best team in Chicago/baseball is...
WTF

It's still the Cubs, but it does add perspective that perhaps the talent is a bit better in the AL.

But this team was 25-5 on Memorial Day and its the same team on the field. That's why Im pulling a huge trade that I heard about because Im friends with Theo Epstein personal secretary. That's how I knew we were sending for Chapman.

He's all yours CCS Cubs Fans

I honestly don't buy that but then again I'd wager talent overall in MLB is fairly flat. Fans are quick to jump on things like "<X> player is shit!" or <Y> Player is amazing!" but the reality of the situation is the difference between a .200 hitter and a .300 hitter is around 50 hits over the course of the season. You're talking about 10 hits or so a month that separates career minor league players and all-stars/HOF types. At the MLB level the gap is even smaller. A .250 hitter is around 5 hits a month worse.

It's interesting to think about really because it does give you a good idea why players will resort to literally any perceived edge be it PEDs, corking bats, stealing signs.... whatever. It's also crazy to think about how something so trivially small changes the money players make so drastically. Granted, I think these days it's more about power numbers be it K's or HR/SLG as a .300 hitter with no power really isn't that big of a deal.

But this team was 25-5 on Memorial Day and its the same team on the field. Same fucking guys. That's why Im pulling a huge trade that I heard about because Im friends with Theo Epstein personal secretary. That's how I knew we were sending for Chapman. We were going to get the fucking guy and they knew it on Friday. Im not bullshitting you guys.

They talked to Chapman on the phone on Friday morning and the gist of that call was whether Chapman was committed to being a good citizen. And they would **** him if he lied to them.

And he told them Im good, he made up some shit and he probably is sorry. We don't know the guy was going to kill her. Guys who abuse women tend to not stop. But he's not fucking OJ Simpson cause shes not giving some 25 year old model ride around in his Ferrari.

But were going to be getting either Ryan Braun or Jay Bruce by the deadline.

Holy run on sentence, Batman!

A few thoughts from yesterday:

1) Travis Wood should be ashamed of himself. It ended up not mattering because we didn't score a run, but for Wood to walk both Navarro and Schmuck -- with matching .260 OBP's -- he should be ashamed of himself. If I were Theo Epstein, I would have walked onto the field towards the mound in the middle of the inning and released him in front of 39,500 fans. To walk two guys who are not MLB caliber hitters, it's absolutely appalling. I'm embarrassed for him.

2) Jason Heyward should issue an apology to the Chicago Cubs organization, to his fellow team mates, to the city of Chicago, and Cubs fans every where. My friend called him a 6'5" black Darwin Barney. I want him to hold a Press Conference and apologize to us. If he didn't have a $185M contract, he would be in Iowa right now. If we're going to play somebody with his production, I'd rather it be Almora Jr. Almora Jr is making $20M less per year than Heyward. Jason Heyward should give back $15M of his salary this season.

3) Kyle Hendricks did his job. He gave us 2 runs in 6 innings. With a lineup featuring Rizzo, Bryant, etc -- that should be more than enough. But James Shields made Kris Bryant look silly. James Shields sucks - mind you. I don't care if he's throwing better lately -- he was nearly optioned down after his first four starts. There is no way James Shields should throw 7 scoreless innings against us.

4) How is the acquisition of Chapman going to help us when we can't hit? Or when we do hit, we can't drive the runners home? Chapman won't see the field in the playoffs. We beat Texas and the Mets and Theo thought we were bouncing back - and he was wrong. We won 4 out of 6 games -- way, way too soon to declare us back. Now we gave us Torres for a guy who can't get on the field and we still can't hit for the life us.

5) Chris Sale will no-hit us tomorrow -- which will demoralize the Cubs in a way the first two Pirates games did before the All-Star break. A Chris Sale no-hitter will be a Death Blow to the season.

Most overrated and overhype sports team in history. The Cubs are a media creation of ESPN and WGN to sell site views and advertising. This team is moving toward a quick first round exit in the playoffs

Oh, almost forgot Vegas. They will make untold millions from all the Cub homer bettors that over bet the Cubs' chances. Hookers and Sprite for everyone!!!!!!

Well Heyward got paid so...

I'm not saying two games determines who is better, but the belief that the NL is superior has really not shown itself to be true with IL play. That's all that really gets said.

Not sure that IL play is the Barometer I'd use to decide who's "better." To start with, each team doesn't even play every other team. And even if that wasn't an issue, you have to define what you mean by better. Is the league better if it has more top teams or if the overall talent of the league is better? For instance, the NL had the 3 best teams record wise in the majors last year. Off the top of of my head I don't know if they had the worst teams in the majors but it's probably a fair guess they did. The AL had more parity.

Overall, I think it's kind of a pointless endeavor to compare leagues because often times when two teams play each other it's more about the match ups than it is about being "better." For example, the mets were clearly a bad match up for the cubs in the playoffs last year but I'd argue the cubs could have beat KC. So what will often happen is you get a bit of rock paper scissors where Team A can beat Team B but losses to Team C while Team B can beat Team C.

Feel like you have a rather short memory. The nationals were talked up as much if not more than the cubs last year and they were 83-79. I'm going to go out on a limb and say the cubs finish with a better record than that.

I agree, but it's about the best we got for comparisons. time and time again though the AL shows it is better in these head to head matchup which eventually teams play everyone over three years I believe.

Not sure that Chicago could beat that Royals team.

I predicted that the NL would have the power rankings top and bottom but not come out on top in IL play. So far dead on solid.

Don't buy it. I'm on ESPN and SI all the time and the Cubs are the number one topic in sports. Some days they have 5-6 articles/Snippets. The Nats weren't covered like that. The media has spun the hype machine up on the Cubs when in fact this team deserves only a portion of the hype.

Ahhh, so you get most of your baseball acumen from ESPN and Sports Illustrated? That explains a lot.

Yeah it was bad, but my head was spinning last night. Our offense doesn't seem to know how to hit when they get down even a run. If they score first they're way over .500 but way under when not scoring first. The Cubs need to learn that they can hit just as well when they're down a run or three. With so many HR threats (Rizzo,Bryant,Baez,Contreras,Zobrist, Fowler) no lead should be insurmountable. But you watch tonight, were going to take an early lead and then cruise to the win. Because everyone is now back to 100% to where we were in May when were 20 games over after 32 games. Only Schwarber isn't back but we lost him in the 4th fucking game. He in effect hasn't been on the team this year.

Were going to be fine and if you guys keep getting all hang dog after 2 losses when we didn't hit shit then its going to a long season...Cause that stuff happens to even the best teams. The Giants are 2-8 over their last 10. Nice way to start off the second half.

Yeah it does. Like he doesn't know jack shit about baseball and is just a bitter old man who can't just sit back and enjoy this season. Stop saying how much the Cubs suck because it you really think that, why are you here? If its just to say "the Cubs suck and are a media creation" and all the other BS you say then I wish you would stop posting in a Cubs forum where most of us are real fans who pull for the team through thick and thin. Im really sick of reading your tripe about how much the Cubs suck and have no potential. What has this team done but win? Last year they lost in the NLCS which is as far as this team has been in over 60 years. This year I and most folks here believe this year the Cubs are going to the WS and are going to win it. I want to be a part of the first Cubs championship in 108 years don't you? This team is the best chance we've had since I've been a fan for over 30 fucking years.

If the vaunted Cubs offense can't beat the tar out of our AAA pitcher perhaps you all aren't meant for the playoffs after all. Bet the house on the Cubs tonight boys.

The vaunted Cubs offense? Our offense has been awful lately. And then every fourth game we'll score 9 runs to jack up the numbers. Another good example is Kris Bryant -- who in a single game will get 3 hits, 2 HR's and 4 RBI's -- and then do nothing the next three games.
