their regression mainly comes from the OF..
last year combined OPS of starting OF was around .750.. this year around .620 due mainly to schierholtz .502

schierholtz has an AVG year with a .723 OPS , their a better offensive team

Depends on if and when they get help from the minors. At the moment yes they are. However, we're only 25% into the season and the pitching for the most part has been very good. They just can't hit to save their lives. Schierholtz has to start hitting. If they get anything out of Baez and Alcantara in the next month or so that can change though obviously they may lose a starter maybe two to trades. I also think Hendricks can come up and be good.

Also, Rizzo is every bit what you hope he can be as well as Castro being what you would expect. The regression is just the fact they haven't tried to add anything to them. Schierholtz is the only one that's really regressed. Perhaps you could say Castillo is down some too but he's not terrible.

White Sox are making the grand plan more difficult by kicking the Astros asses tonight.
They'll be more chances later on.
Hope Springs Eternal.

That is if that's the goal we're seeking?

I wish a beat reporter would ask Renteria WHY HE KEEPS EMPLOYING THE SAC BUNT WHEN IT NEVER WORKS.

I wish a beat reporter would ask why the team is so chock full of crap, and that your 5th hitter in the line-up would be bunting anyways? Is there a hurry to get to Darwin Barney?

Put the blame on the person(s) who are responsible for assembling this team that anyone with a half a brain, knew that they were inept in the hitting department.

Shouldn't they be doing whatever it takes in trying to rid themselves as being the laughing stock in all of sports?

Really? How many guys on this team do you absolutely feel comfortable with when they step into the batters box? I can think of one and a half, and I would take Travis Wood over the other 6 players right now.

OPS 2013.......................2014
LF: Sori: .754...............Lake .739 Evn
CF: Dejesus: .732.........Bonfacio: .694 Dwn
RF: Schierholtz .770......Schierholtz: .502 Dwn
3B: Valbuena: .708.......Olt .704 Even
SS: Castro: .631..........Castro .813 UPG
2B: Barney: .569..........Valbuena .758 UPG
1B: Rizzo: .742............Rizzo .872 UPG
C: Castillo: .746...........Castillo .689 Dwn

I look at it as they should be better but Rick is putting platoons out there when they are not needed.

Just putting Kalish in RF vs RH pitching min RF's loss. .644 OPS VS .502.

Puts the line up as:
Bonifacio CF .694
Kalish RF .644
Rizzo 1B .872
Castro SS .813
Valbuena 3B .758
Lake LF .739
Olt 3B .704
Castillo C .689

That puts only 3 below .700 OPS in the line up vs 2 last year. But the 3 below are close vs Barney and Castro who were nowhere close last year to .700

Cubs with 3 runs right off the bat for Edwin..... I really think they must have some kind of disdain for Samardzija.

Lol.. what does this have to do with saying their regression mainly comes from the OFers compared to last yr. ,
and mainly Schierholtz ?

It has everything to do with what I said. There is one and a half good hitters on this team, and nothing more than that. Spin it the way you want if you feel there is anything more positive than that because I don't see it, and I have played and seen a ton of baseball in my lifetime.

You can have your opinion of them only having 1 1/2 good hitters..

Still has nothing to do with me saying their main regression from last yr. Comes from the OF position and mainly Schierholtz.

CSF even posted a comparison that showed that..

So, don't know why you quoted me to say what you had to say.
You could've just posted it as your opinion..

Statistically, the number say there are 3 good hitters(Bonifacio, Castro and Rizzo and read that as good not GREAT). Castillo is acceptable especially at C. Rest of the line up is pretty garbage though and not just bad. Barney, Olt, Schierholtz, Sweeney, Ruggiano and Coghlan have been replacement level bad. Kalish and Lake have been better than that but not a ton. Valbuena has been sort of acceptable.

On the plus side, the barrier to improvement is REALLY low. The comment has been what if the prospects suck. Well, if Alcantara comes up and hits like Lake he's still an improvement over a lot of the shit they've rolled out.

Edwin Jackson pitching like he possessed today

Don't look now but his ERA is down to 4.05. If he has a couple more starts like this he may actually have some people interested at the trade deadline.

Maybe Garza had a talk with him too..

with all these starters going down, putting together 4-5 good starts now should get teams in contention interested..

Neil Ramirez has been filthy. 14.46 k/9 1.93 bb/9 in 9.1 IP. He's a guy I specifically pointed out when looking at prospect numbers prior to this season in the two hitter/pitcher threads I did. If they keep him in the bullpen he's got the ability to be pretty good. That being said, I'm not the biggest fan of them converting all these high powered arms into bullpen guys. If they are doing what the cards did by working people in via the bullpen then fine but Ramirez in particular I thought could be a decent starter.

True. But I was maybe expecting them to scratch out another run or 2 since those first ones were early. The Cubs usually only have 1 inning in which they score anyway, these ones just happened to be enough. Just sucks for Shark, Cubs got him 3 and then he doubled up what he usually gives and lost. Baseball is funny.
