After a competitive series where the Cubs and Pirates played to extra innings twice, the Northsiders turn their attention to Rocky's boys from Philly. Cubs' starters put together three solid outings, being let down by an inability to plate runners in scoring position. It's a three-game series, the first at baseball's Sistine Chapel (Wrigley Field). So, how about it Cubs fans? You ready to sing it once again?

"Hey Chicago, what do ya' say? The Cubs are gonna' win today!"

Interesting note: Ryne Sandberg has never managed a team that won a series on the road (I believe in 6 or 7 attempts). One of those series losses came against the Cubs late last season.

I think that changes this series - lel. Cubs get 1.

I think the Cubs get back to 500 before the long and ugly road to 90+ losses.

Bonifacio CF 11 for 16
Castro SS 1 for 13
Rizzo 1B 2 for 13
Schierholtz RF 3 for 12
Valbuena 3B 3 for 7
Castillo C 1 for 10
Sweeney LF 1 for 7
Barney 2B 1 for 7
Wood P

No Lake either.

Bench:

Lake: 4 for 13
Olt: 1 for 7
Ruggiano: 0-5
Kalish: 0-3
Baker: 0-4

I'm questioning Sweeney over Lake in the lineup and them continuing to hit Castro and Rizzo 2/3 is the same robotic thinking geared towards contract.

Usually they get bench guys a lot of ABs in beginning of season to get them ready.

I do hope soon he just let Lake and Olt play every day to see what they can do.

Castro and Rizzo will eventually start hitting like they do , besides I dont see anyone else deserving to be put in those spots now.

@ESPNChiCubsRenteria says he still wants to ease Olt in there for now . Maybe take it easy on shoulder. Sighted slick conditions.

It is more about stringing together hits. You go with who has been hitting and pushing the slumpers together.

The goal is to score runs not wait for hitters to avg out.

If managers actually managed for once and put together lane ups based off of trends they up their %'s of scoring runs.

Not to mention making Boni make shorter lead offs. 2 pick offs takes away 2 of his hits in reality.

I don't disagree but besides Boni who else is really hitting now ?

Boni pickoffs are on him not the manager, he was overly aggressive early on. He a veteran player im not too concerned about him getting picked off much.

Top of the line up = more AB's.

So giving more AB's to a lower OBA = more outs. Not more run opportunities.

It is game based off of %'s. You have to play it that way to be successful.

It is not about name value. No one on the team is even a all star.

Look at OBA. That is always the answer.

Rick just to tell him Pick off is giving up a out. Pretty simple

Rule of thumb:

Bunt to advance a runner = Giving up a out.

Being picked off = giving up an out.

Attempting to steal a base = gamble = giving up an out 50% of the time on Avg. (bad odds)

You go by the %. Walk = OBA hit = OBA. bunt = out.

Are you talking career wise or based on this season so far ?

Are you looking for Barney to bat 2nd and Schierholtz to bat 3rd ?

Who from this lineup would you put in the 2/3 hole and be comfortable with it all year ?

Not gonna argue about your style of play but that basically been the NL style forever besides the getting picked off part....

It is based off of %'s.

Take Lake. Say over the year he gets 15 bunt hits to get on base out of 45 attempts.
That is a OBA of .333 but it is also a SLG of .333.

By going up with the goal of bunting it takes away from his power.

A walk does the same thing but it doesn't take away from SLG and it keeps him in the AB to look for that mistake pitch.

The whole advancing a hitter by giving up an out is just dumb in general. Now hit and run maybe.

On Barney...I would platoon him with Valbuena at 2B. Boni I would start in CF until further notice.

Once the season plays out more then you adjust to the trends of the players.

Say Olt sucks then move Valbuena back to 3B.

Right now Olt and Barney both are putting up crummy OBA but Olt has a .571 SLG. Makes his bat higher priority right now. Month from now will play it self out.

Again I would go with trends. Not a set line up.

If Rizzo OBA is.250 for the past 2 weeks. That means he is an out 75% of the time. Those are bad odds and it doesn't justify more AB's.

That is just an example.

Again it is just going with the hot hand.
