Somehow he keeps them in games. I see the potential but eventually he's got to execute. At this point in the season you keep giving him the ball, but by July decisions have to be made.
He get away with it sometimes because he doesn't give up the hits and he gets some Ks

I don't think it is tough choice. Montgomery has had his issues as well but you have to go with him when Darvish returns. Chatwood should be relegated to long relief/mop up duty. The guy is a train wreck right now.

you cannot put a guy in the bullpen who is going to walk alot of hitters.

I just looked at the Almora slide at home.. I missed it live

He slides in normal feet first
He makes it easily and there no need for a review

Kinda. You have to look at financial commitments also.

Reality is they made their bed and are not wanting E.Jax deux. What they want is to right the ship.

That said shit happens and tough choices are forced

At least Happ went 3 for 3 today.
5 for last 33 16 Ks

With Almora Heyward Zobrist Schwarber hitting

I think Happ is going to see less starts

I was peaking around at various stats looking to see where the cubs might look at trades. My first thought was bullpen because while it's been good they don't really have the "best" guys. But something stood out to me. Rosario and Hancock have been fantastic and they aren't even sticking long term with the team. Mazzoni has also been great. And Smyly is probably a guy we'll see by the end of July. His numbers vs LH batters on his career are ridiculous at .200/.243/.334 with 10.05 k/9 and a 1.66 bb/9 to go with a 3.20/2.76 ERA/FIP. And the thing to keep in mind is most of that was as a starter. His stuff probably plays up in the bullpen. Cishek is #9 in baseball(including starters) among pitchers with 10 IP with a .184 wOBA vs RH batters. Strop is no slouch either at .227 which is good for #46. The depth in this bullpen is truly ridiculous. I suppose if just the right guy came along at just the right price maybe you pull the trigger but the pen looks fairly set.

In terms of starters, I don't think there's any serious consideration for moving Q/Lester/Darvish/Hendricks. I can see the case for improving upon Chatwood but I'm just not sure how you do it. For one thing he's not going to see playoff starts assuming they get there. Another thing is they have him for 3 years. You're not just going to release a guy and trading him seems unlikely. I think more likely you just get buy with him until later in the year and then you look at Smyly/Monty if he's not improved enough which is likely to be around the time rosters expand.

In terms of starters, russell is on a 4 win pace. He's currently trading power for contact. His iso has dropped from .179 the past 2 years to .106 but his average has gone from .238/.239 to .272 and his walk rate is up a bunch. If he can find a little more power without losing that contact he's probably a 5 win player. Machado for what it's worth is on pace for 6.6 wins. So, I don't really see the logic there right now unless it's a sweatheart deal. And trying to shoehorn anyone else into an already crowded line up seems unlikely.

One area i could see a case being made is brining in a better back up C. Gimenez is clearly not here for his bat. Caratini had a wRC+ of 68. Given what Contreras is it's not an urgent need but wouldn't hurt to have a decent vet back behind him.

Caratini is only down because the cubs would have had to release Jiminez if he was not brought up to the team. So they finally figure to see if he can be around to fix Darvish, and darvish has not pitched since he came up. Now that Chatwood and Contrares have had words, he wont catch Darvish unless they split him and Chatwood apart or do what they should and bench Chatwood.

What is the point of needing to trade for a backup catcher with Caratini in the system? You are basically proving my point that the cub fans are the ones demanding trades when there are options in the system just to get a better name, whether or not if its a better option.

Because Caratini's results clearly aren't ready for the majors. Look I'm not saying they trade for a guy and sign him to a 5 year deal or whatever. But they literally make depth trades every year for vets to help them solely for this season. What I was referring to was something similar to what they did last season with Avila. If Caratini had hit well in the majors it'd be another story but his wRC+ was in the 60s.
