who is going to come in when he walks the first two batters?

You simplify him. Limit to 2 pitches and force him to master his fastball command with a slider counterpitch.

No help from Arrieta and the Phillies again today...

Arrieta got roughed up for 5 runs in 6 innings for the loss

That fine but you dont experiment like that in a set up role right away...

You pick your spots for him til he gets it going

No aguments here. We saw this with Wilson. When right, dominate.

Saw someone on twitter comment the cubs are on basically 100 win pace. It's kind of crazy they've been this good and they haven't really even played to their potential yet.

Arrieta was very lucky the first two months of the season. His K/9 is way down and he was giving up HRs significantly below his career average. He was due to regress. People who were pining for him over Darvish were foolish.

Interesting that you say this only after a bad outing.

I mean he's not wrong. Arrieta's k/9 is 6.16 this year. His 2 good years with the cubs he was 9.59 and 9.28. Last 2 years he was 8.67 and 8.71. Going below 7 k/9 for what they are paying him is seriously concerning. He's largely surviving because his HR/FB rate is 5.9% vs his 10.6% career rate. If you look at his xFIP to normalize that it is 3.92. None of that makes what Darvish has done better but those are very troubling numbers for Arrieta going forward.

They were 26-19 when Darvish when down and Montgomery took over. 12-5 after that. Hendricks has 2 of them Q 1. Chatwood 1 and Lester 1. Last 2 losses were on Kyle's start. 1 one was tough luck. Last one he got beat up.

Chatwood is getting the eye due to his walks but Hendricks is also going through a spell right now also. He needs to step up today.

I've been saying that his numbers were unsustainable for weeks, long before his last two bad starts. Feel free to search.

I apologize. Wasn't meaning to sound like a dick - but I did! :)

Maybe if Darvish got his k/9 down and trusted his defense he might save his arm and pitch into the 5th inning.

Darvish return date still uncertain..
Throwing but not pitching right now

Wouldnt surprise me if they hold him out til after the break as long as they keep winning series and Monty pitching well..

Darvish coming off a long season ( world series hangover)
He'll have a fresh arm for a 2nd half run and into the post season

It's funny -- obviously, listening to the Cubs broadcast, here, JD has laryngitis. Has had a really bad voice for the past day or two. (I'm sure it was mentioned a while back, in the broadcasts, but I can't follow the games from beginning to end most days, even though I work from home. I can look in on games in my brief down times, but that's it, usually.)

But the first time I heard JD with his bad voice, a couple of days ago -- and this won't make *any* sense to all of you millennials out there -- I could have sworn the color commentary was being done by Vince Lloyd.

Made me wonder if they were gonna bring in a Lou Boudreau ringer to take Len's place for an inning... ;)

Probably should of left Bryant in the lead off spot, he better as an On Base guy then one to drive in runs..

Gonna sound weird but wondering if him being more selective and working on cutting his Ks down , being less aggressive has anything to do with his homerun drought and driving in runs..

He not up there hacking and taking some good pitches that he would normally attack

I'm getting tired of Happ sad at bats, they are really sad, you can see he has no hope to get a hit or even a good at bat and somehow he always reaches the 2 strikes count

According to the stats, he’s awesome.
