To be honest yes. We are looking at a rookie year struggles. He still has not met his potential.

Castro is good for .280 but OBA of .330. He walks at a low rate. His extra base power is at a all time low. D has been suspect but that has regressed to his early career numbers. Speed used to be a plus now non existent.

He has not gotten better with age. He should be entering his prime right now and he has taken a nose dive.

I'm not sure what to think about him right now. Lack of preparation in the off season? I really do not know.

So as of right now. Baez (healthy) would be a bigger chip
I can respect that even if I am a 180 from that opinion.

I get it. Proven vs unproven. Still when a proven is regressing and a unproven is starting to show signs of a break through it factors.

Now max potential for each:

D is a wash

O Baez should be a .250/.333/.500 hitter. Pushing 30 HR's every year. Castro. Well look at 2014 and that is as good as it gets. We also can look as right now as how bad as it gets.

So the question becomes would you rather take what you know or what could potentially be?

Add to it Baez comes in with questions which lowers his trade value. Now if he gets playing time and he explodes his value soars. That is a factor for team wanting to get in before his value becomes proven. Flip side Cubs may want to sell him while his value is a unknown instead of risking losing his trade weight. Flip side is letting him gain value causes another issue. Where to fit him in?

If it was me I would move him to CF. There is a opening happening in the offseason anyways. It saves you cash in CF. But my opinion is they are looking at Baez to save them $$$ spent on getting a SP option. Trading for a TOR like Sonny will cost less in next years budget vs signing a F/A TOR.

I don't agree with it though. The problem has been run generation. That outweighs the need for a TOR.

What games are you watching here? Admittedly Cogs struggled to start the season but since the start of june(133 PAs or roughly 53% of his season total) he is hitting .273/.398/.373. Incidentally from june forward Rizzo is hitting .273/.380/.504. Bryant over that same time frame is .257/.356/.464. So in terms of average and OBP since June Coghlan has been one of their two best hitters. That's not to exclude his pretty horrible start but I said then that he would rebound because nothing in his numbers numbers suggested he was any worse than the great year he had in 2014 and some indicated he was playing better than 2014. Of course that didn't stop the "trade for LF" bandwagon.

Forgive me if I'm reading this wrong. After writing that paragraph it occurred to me that maybe you meant that when Rizzo was crushing early season Cogs wasn't hitting. I guess I've sort of gotten in the mindset that people are over looking Cogs because you fairly consistently hear people saying they need to trade for a LF and I'm sitting here looking Cogs since june and thinking who you going to get that's been better than him lately?

Don't forget the fact that Cogs has been hitting under a black cloud almost all season. He's hit a ton of smoked balls that are either right at someone or the defense makes a great play. Gotta be super frustrating. I like his approach, his knowledge of the strike zone, the ability to play multiple spots...to me he's a valuable piece to have.

should have traded Castro 2 years ago I guess. I thought he was gonna be somebody, but jettison physical talent lacking mental when young I guess isn't a bad rule.

Well that hard hit ball aspect was why I had been telling people prior to June I thought LF would be fine. But yeah he's medium and hard hit ball rates are both higher than last year last i checked.

I don't know, but Castro was seeing the most balls PA in his career when he started to struggle. He is pull happy instead of going the other way. Its like he is trying to force being a power hitter. I have always thought he is to far from the plate with his stance. When he changed it, I always thought he was just way to far. I know a month ago he said he was looking for to many breaking balls and missing fastball. He did the exact same thing in his bad year.

Whats funny is he batter .330 in the first month. The league didn't adjust to him. He just lost it somehow. The last month and a half before he got injured he batted over .350. He had complete control of the zone. Something or someone got into his head. Castro is not a thinker. He needs to just react. Stop trying to yank homers and put the balls in the gap like he used to be so good at. I am way more confident in Castro figuring things out in the second half then Russell. I don't think Russell bat is or was ready. People think I am knocking him. I am not. I haven't seen improvement. He still looks very over matched out there. Sure, he can have a bat or two thats good.

I think if he continues to struggle the cubs are either going in house to solve the problem or trading for Zobrist. The Cubs are in a playoff hunt. Russell continues to get closer to sub .200. The Cubs are going to have to make a switch. Now, the whole team continues not to hit then none of this will matter so we will see.

What? The whole team isn't hitting? Surely you jest!

Yeah, really. The only guy who has been even semi-consistant has been Rizzo. A lot of people putting Bryant in there as well....I'm not, as I think he's only scratching the surface of what he will eventually be. If you watch him closely you can see that he is finally learning to take all that outside crap he's getting fed and and start driving it to right....hasn't worked out real well yet but it will. I think he knows now that you won't make a living out of trying to pull outside pitches. The guy that I'm most disappointed in so far is Soler. I thought he had better power than he's shown. But its early in his career, hopefully things will pick up for him in the second half.

Silver has raw power. I have said this for awhile. He has never been consistent with it but it's there. But, he can go on streaks. He needs to get more lift. He is line driving everything which is great but not getting the ball out the park

Hope you're right. I do like him in RF, while he does need a bit of work on his angles to the ball....you gotta love his arm. Cubs haven't had an arm like that in right since Dawson.
