Is there a SPCA where you live...you can probably find a Beagle that is no where near $250 to get. And depending on your income level, I know the SPCA where I am at offers vet services at a fraction of what it costs at most other vets.

I adopted my first beagle from a friend of an ex-GF...got him when he was 5 years old and he is still going strong at 17 years. I haven't had any issues with him outside of the annual visit which would typically run me about $100-$200. Some of that cost was heartworm meds which you can get at a pretty good price through 1-800-petmeds. I honestly probably didn't need to take him in each year but was nice to have the peace of mind. My other beagle I got as a puppy through a local animal shelter and it cost me $50(?). The first year his vet bills were probably in the $250 range if I remember correctly, but since then he is like the other beagle.

If you get a Beagle I would suggest you have a fenced in back yard and until they get used to the freedom keep an eye on them. I have a fenced in yard and have a doggy door, so my nimrods go in and out as they please. I keep an eye on the perimeter to make sure the young one isn't digging by the fence, but after 3 years he keeps that to a minimum. Also try to keep them entertained while they are puppies, I would throw treats in the yard for him to go scavenging for. That would keep his nose at work and after an hour of playtime and treat searching he was good.

I'm a Beagle guy, will always want a Beagle...they are great dogs.

Great post, thanks for the info. I did check the SPCA and not one dog was listed within 50 miles from me. Maybe their website is messed up? The other shelters I've looked at are all $250 and up.
As for a yard, it would be ideal but unfortunately I live in a townhouse. I'm hoping to move somewhere south next year but I'm stuck for now.

if you are ok with waiting until after hunting season...a lot of shelters have a lot of Beagles after hunting season and will practically give them away. So if you are ok with or wanting a beagle that is a couple years old that may be a good option
