You mean THIS MP5SD? (They aren't illegal by the way, as long as you have the correct trust and tax stamp)
You are nuts Ron. What do you need a barrett for!?! I agree on the Kimber though. Reliable with friggin mud on them.
Supra you have fallen victim to the mass media. Suppressors and automatic weapons are NOT illegal to own or use, especially in the state of FL. You either need a signature from the chief law enforcement officer in your area on your paperwork, or you need to have a trust set up. Most people go the route of the trust, which can be set up for around $400. In that trust you can have all sorts of goodies including automatics and suppressors. Once you have the trust set up, then you order your goodies, pay the tax stamp of $200 per item and wait. Most suppressors are in the $500-$800 range, and automatics are usually thousands and thousands of dollars.
For those who are interested but do not know, we use the term suppressor instead of silencer because there is no such thing as silencing a gun. Suppressors limit the sound and recoil, but they do not eliminate it. Hollywood has done a great job of scaring people into thinking you can go around in stealth mode and shoot people all day with a suppressor on your weapon.
As a sidenote about that MP5SD: The suppressor and gun have the same serial numbers. The suppressor is an integral part of the weapon, not just an add-on. I tried to fire it full-auto without the suppressor and could only get one round to fire. Without the suppressor, there wasn't enough back pressure to cycle another round.
How about one made of ice?
A shotgun would serve my needs best (home defense and dispatching varmints in the yard) but I've wanted a M1 Garand for the last 7 years or so (thank you Call of Duty).
There is a local 4H shooting club in the area that participates in the CMP (citizens markmanship program). Been thinking about joining and taking the kids for gun safety lessons/shooting at the range. It would also give me access to surplus military rifles like the aforementioned M1 Garand.
I thought there was a distinction between a silencer and suppressor. I thought a silencer lowered the sound while a suppressor lowered sound and flash.
Where can you go around the chicago area to shoot?

Also I thought on the MP5SD that the suppressor was part of the barrel on that particular model of the MP5. Which was one of the reasons it was so quiet
