There are a couple of players on defense that I think are worthy of contract extensions and have shown that they were good value signings, good scheme fits, and have upside to continue to develop in this system.
Jarvis Jenkins
Jenkins arrived with little fanfare as a disappointing 2nd round pick from Washington. Thought of as little more than a depth signing, he has found a home in this system, been shockingly productive and been trusted to play multiple spots and downs and distances.
After re-watching the Chiefs game, where Jenkins was held off the stat sheet, I could see him still having an impact on the game. This shows a consistency to his game and that he is more than just 2-3 splash plays every couple of games.
I started looking at the 3-4 DE contracts from free agency to get an idea about a possible extension.
High End: Jared Odrick [Jacksonville] 4 years 42.5 million/22 guaranteed
Mid Level: Kendall Langford [Indianapolis] 4 years 17 million/3 guaranteed
Comparable:
Corey Peters [Arizona] 3 years 9 million/5.5 guaranteed
Randy Starks [Cleveland] 2 years 6.5 million/3.5 guaranteed
Alan Branch [New England] 2 years 4.5 million
Jenkins is younger than the above players and arguably is producing better than those players when they signed those deals. It seems 3-4 million is a comparable base salary and 3-5 million in guarantees would be fair. This puts Jenkins in a very similar position to that of Matt Slauson who was re-signed after a very successful 1 year deal.
My contract offer: 4 years 14 million/5 million guaranteed
This gives Jenkins long term security, a fair market value, and allows the Bears to retain a young player. If Jenkins continue to play out of his mind I would move the offer to closer to Langfords 4 years 17 million/5 guaranteed.
