This. They both might be future top 10 QBs. As it stands right now, Daniels is playing for a better overall team. He has a better OC and o line. For those reasons plus his legs, he’s looked like the better QB.
On a side note, would be nice if Poles actually put the effort into upgrading the o line next year and they went all in on a coach like Ben Johnson. Realistically they will probably sign tier 3 guys and hire the Panthers DC as HC.
You are not keeping in mind that JD probably should not have been in the game. He gutted it out though. For a QB, every time you throw with any degree of velocity at all (aside from pure arm passes) you are going to feel it in your rib cage. Despite this, Hail Mary aside, he still looked to be the better "passing" QB yesterday. Need more evidence of how well he throws? Go check out his statistics... plus he is on track to be in the MVP conversation this year...
and he is not in the conversation just because of his legs.
Give the man credit where it is due.
Also, go back and check the record of the Bears last year..... and check the record of the Commanders last year. So all of this "better team" talk is quite hilarious. There is one guy primarily responsible for making that team so much better this year - Daniels. Does he have a tad bit better Oline? Probably. But he was also feeling the heat from the Bears rush yesterday
and keep in mind that the guy was not healthy - and he still looked like the superior QB.
He plays with a calm and command rarely seen.... rookies and vets included. That's a gift my friend.... he has that. He has always had that. That is what I loved about him coming out. I always said he, quote
"he plays the game like he has it on a string".
As for Caleb, the reason I did not get too high about his performances against the Panthers and Jaguars is he had wide open lanes to throw through. If you check my prior posts, the thing I pointed out that we need to watch for with him is HEIGHT -- and his lack thereof. That, afro aside, he is more closer to 6 foot even and appears to struggle when you muddy up his vision at the line of scrimmage by creating a bit of a fence with tall defenders. Without those wide open lanes, I have been waiting to see how he would perform. Yesterday was the test.
Here is my early verdict:
Caleb needs better coaching. It was obvious the lack of height was bothering him
from the pocket... which, at times, forced him to hold on to the ball too long. So he needed plays drawn up to get him out of the pocket. When Waldron started doing that in the 4th quarter, Caleb started having success.
That running around and success also led to the Commanders line getting a bit gassed, which in turn led to a little bit of success from the pocket. It is imperative to get him on the move when defenders create a fence of height against him. I fault Waldron for waiting so long to do that.
Early verdict on both of these guys:
JD is clearly better - throwing and running at this early stage. Both have a bright future. Can Caleb end up being better? Yes, but he will need smart coaching because adjustments will likely always have to be periodically made to account for his lack of height.... particularly when facing defenses that have the ability to create a fence around him to muddy up his vision. Also notice that when that happens, Caleb tends to miss badly.... like waaay off. That's because the guy can't see. We need to be smarter... when this happens, we need to get him outside of that fence so that he can see.
