This has turned into a trade Bolland, he's done thread? Not so fast, this guy would have played every single fucking game last year if it weren't for that stupid fucking elbow to his head. The injury was clearly not serious from all the interviews tonight, he said it was NOT related to his back, concussion or previous injuries. Who knows if its true but I trust the rat, as bad as that sounds. This guy IMO single handedly reminded this team what playoff hockey was about last year, he shut down the top line in the NHL, put points up and we were a goal away from history.....after already making it a year before. Bolland has had his injuries yes, but holy shit, we get rid of Bolland you better come up with some answers, cause that leaves us with one Center in the top three.....that won't get us anywhere against ANYONE.

And for you PMX, I always appreciate your stats, but here.

Playoffs:

10'- GP:22 G:8 A:8 P:16 +/-6

11'- GP:4 G:2 A:4 P:6 +/- 6

^^^^^Please present your example of a better shut down center. PLEASE. Those are numbers that people would be happy with their 1-4th wings to putting up, getting that out of your 3rd line center is unbelievable. Although I think he'll play most the year, if we make the playoffs and he provides that spark again, so be it. Also, your Daze comparison is complete BS, for real did you really have to go THERE, Daze is he who must not be named. Since Bolland has been a regular in 08-09' he's missed 63 games, I assume you tacked on the others before he was a regularly up with the big club? We all know he had the surgery, were he missed half the year in the Cup year, and then the horseshit elbow last year. Both times he came back for his team in time and was arguably the most valuable player on the ice.

"This message has been brought to you by the Dave Bolland fan club."

I think Bolland was to start up in 07-08 when he broke his foot or ankle, and then his finger that year, but I could be wrong.

But if 08-09 is when the official clock starts with him, thats cool. 3yrs out of 246gms ..he's missed 63gms (not counting playoffs) - played in 74% of the games. I counted Daze's last season when he only played 19...so is it ok to shave off that year? In the heart of his career - 8 seasons (656gms)..he missed 79 total - played in 88% of the games.

Would Jordan Staal be a good shut down center? Ryan Kessler? Joe Pavelski? Patrice Bergeron?..those guys aren't bad at what they do.

Yes, he's good in the playoffs...there are several players who are good playoff players. But they do have to get there. Regardless that he plays on what some call a "3rd line", look at his minutes when he's in the lineup. They're top 6. This idea of a "checking line" or third line is 1980's hockey. Players/lines change and top players now play PP/PK. He gets top 6 minutes - so yes, I know his value when he's in the lineup. However, a guy you rely that heavily on...has missed 25% of the games the last 3 seasons, and already starting out hurt, once again - for an 'unknown ailment' this time, allegedly not associated with his back surgery and concussion.

i think it's safe to say, with Hockey players...having back problems (see Daze) or concussion issues (see Savard, Crosby)...they aren't good signs. He's not the biggest guy and already there was a physical altercation with the Smith hit no one (me included) wanted him jumping in for fear he'd get hurt. How effective can a fragile checking center be that relies on grit? Or now the team has to have someone play more minutes/out of position....until the playoffs if he'll be heathly then.

What even happened for him to get hurt this time? There was no hit....that anyone knows. Just not a very good sign that he's getting injured without even having anything happen to him...and they need someone they can rely on, IMO. Good player, very valuable when in the lineup...I'm just not ready or wanting another season where everyone has to play out of position with him in/out of the lineup for back "flareups"

I think he was hit in the game Smith was nailed by Smith. He was hurting at the time of the hit but continued to play.

I mean Staal is just as injury prone and a 2nd line center on every single team in the NHL except the Kings and his own right now. Bergeron is not a 3rd line center period, same with Kesler. The only comparable is Pavelski and he's their 2nd line center. The point I was making is I don't know if you can find a pure center like Bolland who knows his role better than anyone in the NHL. I understand your minutes argument but thats also directly related to the fact that when the other teams top line is out there, which is obviously a ton of time, Q has Bollands line right out there.

I know the injuries have looked bad for the start of his career but we neglected to get anything at center to the point that were trying Kane there. I have faith in him returning from the interview I saw yesterday and in no way want him to be shipped elsewhere.

^^^Very good interview with Bowman. Explained out 2nd line center predicament, also mentioned that its obvious Bolland isn't going anywhere.

Jordan Staal mised 1 game (his rookie year) in his first 4 years. Missed 40 last year

TOI last 2 years - This is for PK and even strength -

Bolland - 15:48gm (2nd on Hawks C) - 15:37gm (2nd on Hawks C)

Kessler - 16:52gm (2nd)...16:52 (led team C)...and yes, same both years

Bergeron - 16:13gm (led)..15:10gm (2nd)

Krejci - 15:50gm (2nd)....16:08gm (led)

Staal - 17:29gm (3rd)....18:12gm (led) - Malkin/Crosby out

Pavelski - 16:26gm (2nd)..16:18gm (2nd)

The big descrepancy out of these players...the 'minute' difference...it mostly PP time....

Bolland - 1:43/2:01

Kessler - 2:45/3:37gm

Bergeron - 2:41/2:43

Krejci - 2:24/2:41

Staal - 1:54/3:09

Pavelski - 3:02/3:21

I think he's pretty much right there as 2nd line minutes based on - he's second on the Hawks, just as those guys rate 2nd on their team. He lacks the PP time, but those guys are better goal scorers/point producers. Staal's minutes are higher...based on him playing wing at time as well with PITT and their 3 headed monster.

Bolland gets 2nd line minutes, and is always top 6 minutes on the Hawks. The role he plays...not as some sort of "shut down" center but moreso as the teams 2nd center, are valuable minutes to give someone. He either needs to be healthy/play more than 60 games...or the Hawks need to get someone to fill that role, and just take if he's healthy as a bonus, but not count on it.

I mean you can post the ice times I get that he gets a lot of time when in the lineup. But I say thats due to him being out there almost every second the other teams top line is. The centers you mention are all, all-star caliber, 2 top line centers and 2 second line centers. The Hawks clearly want to have Bolland slotted as the 3rd C on the depth chart, having him there just fits. The others you mention are almost all expected to throw up 70+ for Kesler, Bergeron and 55-60 for the rest. Also I'm really not seeing the point of your comparison of Bolland with these guys, were not getting any of them and if Bolland were in the lineup he'd be......3rd line center, even though his ice time might be near the guys you say.

My point is...he is one of 2 centers on the Hawks - and is expected to play key/important minutes.

If he cannot be counted on to be healthy - then it may be more beneficial to get someone a bit more dependable.

Toews had to take every single faceoff in the DZone the last 2 months of the season last year, and was beat to hell. I don't care if you want to call him the 3rd, 4th, 5th center on the team. The fact is, he's the second center based on his time on ice - not what line you want to say he plays on. Bickell is on his line, wont be top 6 in minutes played. Frolik either.

The comparison ice time? He plays as much as any second line center. He is second only to Toews on the Hawks in ice time for a center. Those guys are all the 2nd line centers on their team...and his ice time compares to them. But...you keep saying he's a 3rd line center. He is relied upon as the Hawks 2nd line/2nd best/Number 2 Center.

So...who gets more minutes at center than he does on the Hawks, other than Toews?

I'm all for the guy - and this is pointing out his importance on a team - that only has 2 centers. If he can't stay healthy or when in the lineup he can't engage for fear of back, head, or any other injury....what's the point? This team cannot simply survive with one center again.
