Jim McMahon was he good or over-rated ? If Mitch is healthy will be way better.

When McMahon came to the Bears he was the all time leading passer in college football history. I think that's true, but maybe too much partying for me over the years. But it was BYU who was pass happy and they played bad defenses.

He wasn't Brady, but he was perfect for that particular team. He was just always injured.

'85 Bears America's Game said he had like 75 records at BYU. lol

he was injured a lot yeah, but when you think about it, they were pretty bad injuries that I think any QB would go down from. that Raiders game in '84 was brutal and the Martin tackle was complete bullshit.

I think the Bears could have traded McMahon to the Colts for Elway. They might have won multiple SBs.

You know that Elway didn't win a SB until that team had the best running attack and D. Sound familiar? People rave about Montana but look at the RBs when they won SBs and the normal pass play. Rice wasn't a deep threat, he'd take a 6 yard pass and hit a semm for 20.

Took Elway a long time to be as clutch. That is what McMahon had when he could still throw properly and Montana always had. I look at a question like the OPs as, was the guy ever really good? Yes he was but became less so after the SB once the should got dinged and then destroyed.

Why do I get the feeling that the OP never saw McMahon play live, is looking at stats and relating them to the modern standard. It's not like McMahon never played in a Pro Bowl.

Yes I know but the Bears had that in place long before Elway won Super Bowls. McMahon was fine till injuries took it's toll. Nothing against Jim but Elway and the Bears could have won more than one SB.

I'm still pissed Rice clobbered the Bears in that home playoff game.

McMahon was the toughest SOB out there. That Minnesota game, Ditka refused to start him and he is behind him, begging! In his ear, taunting Ditka.. Let me in. Let me in. Ditka throws the towel and says **** it go in then asshole. His first 2 passes were touchdowns. He was legendary and he was cut short with injuries. He just had that toughness you want in a player. A punk? yup... A asshole? yup. But he left it all on the field. He actually was such an asshole, he could have been better with his career. The greatest? hell no. I do agree that the worst part of that era is not winning more than 1 title. THat 85 team was the most dominant in history.

There is one litttle stat that everyone has forgotten. Jim McMahon won 25 games in a row that he started. A record that might never be broken. Ya He was pretty good.

You can be the best d and run game ever and not do that unless your QB is clutch.

I seen him play live and yes he was average--------the defense and Walter carried him. If the wind blew the wrong way he was hurt-- after Walter left he did not raise his game but fell off a cliff

I love Jimmy Mac. He was a good QB on a team that was the epitome of the run first and staunch defense philosophy, in an era where that philosophy was the paradigm.

That being said, yes, he was a prima Donna, and yes, he's overrated by our fans. The draft class one year after he was drafted boasted Elway, Marino, and Kelly. They all had HOF careers.

I don't buy the myth about him- he was on a great defense with Walter and Gentry thrown into the mix. Mitch is way more accurate , better deep ball and a better scrambler. Jim was along for the ride

So, I guess it was a bad game for him!

His comeback against SMU was god like.

Crazy, considering he was blind in one eye since childhood.

And it’s weird—I know there is a lot of “absence makes heart grow fonder” and Bears homer mythology, but, I remember him as having a great arm, wicked touch, great vision, supreme handling of offence, don’t give a ****, in your face, headband banned Rozelle motherfucker!

And I am not off.

he was a versatile player too. when he'd catch passes from Walter for scores. :lmao: him and Payton were such a tandem, and then Payton and Suhey. that offense had some options and depth.

alas he played in a different era. all QBs outside the upper echelon elite types (which Marino only really comes to mind?) had very mediocre stats with more interceptions than touchdowns. McMahon at least wasn't a pussy.

to conclude his career, he wore his Bears jersey to the Packers White House visit. he was a defiant and hilarious MF.

Classic

That Martin hit ended our shot at a degree of a dynasty discussion. The hot was after an INT, and it we all felt the shoulder separation and wind out of our sails when it happened.

Flutie was a brief “maybe”, Cutler was a Whoah potential buzz...

Trubs feels real deal. True deal. And the reservations are real as we deal with this...

Got to know Jimmy little bit briefly during his time as a Bear. I worked at a restaurant/bar where he would regularly take his OL for dinner and show his appreciation to them. I loved the way he played with extreme confidence and treated his OL like they were royalty. Wish he would have not been injured. He could have been special. Terrible what he has become from all the vicious hits he took over the years.
