Baltimore Ravens' national scout as director of college scouting? Hell yeah.

Pace is hiring guys just like him. Guys that started out young and have busted their asses to make it as far as they have. He's tapping quality people from quality organizations and he's not surrounding himself with YES men. I think it's apparent he has a vision for this club and it's not going to be filled with guys that are his scouting buddies but rather guys that are nearly equal to the task as he is from top organizations. I could be more pleased with these two hires and fresh faces.

Aren't you glad we didn't hire Ballard which was a total Bears hire?

And would have likely have meant the retention of the guys Ballard worked with here in Chicago and likely guys Emery worked with in KC because those two had close ties to both organizations. Instead we get two new pairs of fresh eyes to scout players and two guys who aren't Pace guys from New Orleans. We have two who started from the bottom of top scouting organizations and are now read for their next big job.

Probably no Fox, no Gase, and especially no Fangio (who was intrigued to work with Fox).

Better story than just his bio:

It doesn't happen often, but a member of the Ravens scouting department is moving on.

National Scout Joe Douglas has accepted a promotion with the Chicago Bears to become their college scouting director.

Douglas has been with the team since 2000 and was a graduate of the team's “20/20 club,” which refers to 20-year-olds hired for $20,000.

He originally joined the franchise as a player personnel assistant, and even made an appearance on HBO's Hard Knocks as “The Turk” – the person responsible for letting training camp players know they were going to be cut.

Douglas was promoted to national scout after the 2012 draft, following three years as a Southeast area scout (2009-2011). He evaluated cornerback Lardarius Webb (Nicholls State), defensive end Pernell McPhee (Mississippi State) among others. As an East Coast scout in 2008, Douglas played a key role in scouting quarterback Joe Flacco and running back Ray Rice.

Douglas also organized and coordinated the undrafted free-agent signing process, which has been extremely successful in signing rookie free agents such as linebacker Jameel McClain (2008), linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (2009), linebacker Albert McClellan (2010), kicker Justin Tucker (2012), wide receiver Marlon Brown (2013) and tackle James Hurst (2014).

The Ravens have been known for maintaining continuity within their scouting department. Douglas was one of the group's longest-tenured members. He gained a reputation for liking tough, physical, grinding players.

“Everybody loves and respects the guy,” said Ravens Senior Personnel Assistant George Kokinis before this year's draft. “You never hear a bad word about Joe even though he's under the radar. He never puts himself out there for as good a scout as he is.”

So far, this seems like a whole new culture change, which is something this franchise has needed for quite some time. I like what I see on the surface so far.

@MoveTheSticks: Joe Douglas (new director of college scouting for the Bears) is one of the best talent evaluators I've ever been around.

From Daniel Jeremiah who was a NFL scout with the Ravens at one time so they likely worked together.

These are the hires you can judge Pace on. The coaching hire was a no brainer, but when your thirty something GM is able to pull the national scout of one of the most respected GMs in the league as his right hand man...you have to be impressed.

Maybe pitching these last hires were how he nailed the interview.

I've been trying not to get too excited about the off-season because of the generally poor talent on D and under center but Pace isn't making it easy.
