It was a good call up, in that it seems to show that the coach has finally figured out that Scott is not a hockey player- but is a role player.
And if you look at the ice times, it indicates that the team went with 3 forward lines, and mainly someone double-shifting on the fourth line, apart from the 2 1/2 minutes of ice time that Scott got.
Now before anyone goes off on Scott -the guy's role is to keep the other side honest. Frankly, I saw Toews try to fight last year, and - you never ever want your skill guys in a position where they feel that they have to stand up for their teammates -if you don't have to. And also frankly, Toews can't fight -but does have the guts to try to stand up for his team mates -but, well -if you get rag-dolled (like he did last season the one attempt that he gave) -it doesn't do anyone any good- if you look at the big picture.
So, in effect - how many liberties were taken with the team this past game?
Cullimore is sort of really a non-factor apart from it gives you a pretty good idea where the depth level is on this team. (He probably is a hell of a lot better defenseman than Scott ever will be - which says a lot ... as journeymen in their late 30's are not really -well, let's just say - in demand.
I doubt you see Scott sent down -in that unlike most guys he probably would get picked up off of waivers.
-So what do you do with a line up that has a Scott in it? Maybe add a couple of other forwards that have specialty roles -say, a faceoff specialist (if there is one at any level in the organization any longer .... there might not be -it was only an example), maybe an extra playmaker type as a powerplay only guy -and then mainly just run 3 forward lines out there.
Anyways -- Cullimore, for the role he had - it appears to have been partly to keep Scott off the ice (which worked this game --- it is the first non- 1 goal game this season). 1 Goal games mean you aren't really that far off from having gone 4 and 0 ... or dropping them all. Considering the team was (and will be) playing hamstrung - it isn't probably really that bad. Hell if the team gets healthy, it might well be scarey. I mean look -you got Kopecky playing at a point per game (technically more than that... and Hossa is going nuts at the moment. . . ).
When Kane comes back I would look for them to maybe demote a forward instead of Cullimore (because playing Scott on a regular shift is a big gamble).
