I can't imagine the Cubs being the bigger offer. Shields makes sense to them as a bargain and a chance to buy some time for guys like Edwards and Johnson or to find some young pitching (think Noah Syndergaard or Sonny Gray) in a trade. It would also allow them to not get into the big money extravaganza next year where guys like Price, Zimmermann and Samardzija will get 7 year deals in the $180-$230 million. If they have to be high bid on him I would expect them to back off. If they don't get him they'll go back to their original pans and wait for other opportunities.

None of the pitchers you mentioned are getting $230MM contracts.

I think Zimmerman is the best way to spend the money, even if it costs more. The one thing is though, it would be better to sign a FA pitcher than trade assets for them. Let it all play out.

The one thing is, if say, the Cubs do trade Baez, I'm hoping for something like Syndegaard. Baez and a small plus would be a fair trade. Baez has had his struggles but so too has Syndegaard,
