For months, the Bulls have talked internally and whispered to organizational confidantes about the desire either to possess enough salary-cap space to sign two big-name free agents outright or engineer a sign-and-trade for one and acquire another with cap space.

The NBA draft may be Thursday, but July 1 — the start of free agency — still dominates management's plans.

League sources continue to indicate the Bulls are shopping the 17th pick and trying to package it with long-term contracts to clear even more cap space than the projected $20 million to $22 million they currently possess. A maximum free-agent salary will start at roughly $16.5 million.

In the current NBA financial climate, it might be a long shot for the Bulls to move either Luol Deng or Kirk Hinrich, particularly for expiring contracts. But the Bulls are trying.

I saw somewhere that the Magic proposed trading Gortat and Pietrus for Deng. I really hope that happens.

oh that would be great man, pietrus is a good 3 point shooter and defender.

gortat could be a good C too off the bench.

Yup. Gortat (6.3) and Pietrus (5.7) also give you trade flexibility if you want to go for Bosh. Im pretty sure Toronto would take Gortat since their offense probably most resembles Orlando's...or at least did resemble.

Another potential S&T candidate might be Dallas if Dirk doesnt go back. Dallas was interested in Gortat last summer.

And if we ended up keeping Pietrus and Gortat, that wouldnt be all bad either. Having a front line like: Noah, Gortat, Asik, and Gibson to go against the likes of the Lakers wouldnt be so bad. But then if we had Rose, Pietrus and James on the perimeter, we should win the day.

yeah, the flexibility is the thing i like.

we would have some options open for us, like you said, we could trade for Bosh in a S&T, and we could possibly still keep noah.

Why do people keep bringing up Asik as though he has ever done a thing in the NBA?

Yeah, I dont know why people keep saying Noah would be involved. Its not a regular trade. Bosh picks where he wants to go and Toronto can take it or leave it. At the worst you can send them a future draft pick...you just need to clear cap space. Thats another place where the flexibility comes into play. Im pretty sure its not hard to trade Gortat on relatively short notice.

If trading Deng and/or Hinrich give us better pieces to S&T for Bosh that'd be sweet!

Well its good news that they are actually trying to get this done(Deng,Kirk, pick trade). If indeed true, it shows you that the Bulls are going for the gusto and maybe they know something we dont because its a big risk trading away Kirk and Deng in hopes of landing a 2nd max FA, when just one added to this team could do wonders for us.

Also i really like Gortat as a backup C, i really do. I also think Petrus(sp) is another solid role player off the bench. Guys like this make championship runs possible but their contracts really dont help with the cap issue. A move like this would make me think that theyve got LeBron on the mind(which is obvious anyways). It answers some questions about the depth problems that ive been worried about lately. Still need a legit 6th man.

It would have to be so amazing that its almost not even realistic...just from the standpoint of value alone.

If they did manage to pull off this trade, I wonder what they'd get or what they want
