Then why don't you ever use those instead of just FIP?
Because FIP is easy to understand, and use. I mean I can go back and calculate (or at least come close) past FIP's if I wanted to. It's very much the ERA of advanced pitching stats. It will give you a decent clue into what you are looking at but not nearly the entire picture.
Regardless looking at stats like WHIP and ERA just don't show the entire picture. Those are very defensively based stats.
It's a reason I am not all that high on Garza. He is going from an elite defense in a pitchers park to an okay defensive team in a pitchers park. People think that him moving from AL East to the NL Central is going to lower his ERA by a ton, and it's not. His xFIP is very scary. I think he will be okay, but he is already probably our 4th best pitcher, and honestly could be worse than Cashner.
