Then why don't you ever use those instead of just FIP?

Because FIP is easy to understand, and use. I mean I can go back and calculate (or at least come close) past FIP's if I wanted to. It's very much the ERA of advanced pitching stats. It will give you a decent clue into what you are looking at but not nearly the entire picture.

Regardless looking at stats like WHIP and ERA just don't show the entire picture. Those are very defensively based stats.

It's a reason I am not all that high on Garza. He is going from an elite defense in a pitchers park to an okay defensive team in a pitchers park. People think that him moving from AL East to the NL Central is going to lower his ERA by a ton, and it's not. His xFIP is very scary. I think he will be okay, but he is already probably our 4th best pitcher, and honestly could be worse than Cashner.

Ya, I'm not that high on Garz either, but he's better than Silva no matter how you look at it.

You are right, but not at the cost that he is now costing.

Garza is projected to be worth 2.8 wins this year, and Silva worth 2.2.

Even if you bump Garza up to 3 wins and Silva down to 1 its not worth all the prospects and now cash.

Ya, I didn't like the trade, but I definitely love the release.

But if we didnt have Garza would you love the release?

I can understand people loving the release given our team now, but getting Garza and releasing Silva is pretty dumb. They should have moved Silva before making the trade.

Silva may still have been released then, since the Cubs said they had Coleman ahead of him for the rotation too.

If Silva did the same thing in ST and had over 10 ERA started fight YES i would have wanted him release and let Coleman be 5th SP.....again Garza was a good pick up. He not only for this year but also the future.

If the Cubs didn't acquire Garza, they could have acquired another pitcher. But if they didn't acquire a pitcher, I could have still seen Silva being release and Coleman taking the 5th spot. Moving Cashner to the 4th spot in the rotation.
