He debuted as a 20-year-old. Actually I don't think he had even turned 20 yet.

He is listed as being 21 for the 98 season, but you are right he debuted as a 20 year old. Yeah I wanted to say he was 19 at first, but I am glad I double checked before posting.

almosts makes me tear up. despite his injuries, he did so much for the organization. it's a shame Mark Prior & Wood couldnt seem to stay healthy. such a great teammate & player... i hope that he stays w/ the organization. i think his number MIGHT be retired...

Was stated earlier in the thread but Wood apparently is going to be a special assistant to the GM.

And I love Kerry as much as the next guy, but retiring the number is a bit much I think. The Cubs have four numbers/five players retired and all of them are in the Hall of Fame. Wood is going to fall well shy of that mark.

i discussed it w/ my dad... idk if it will, but the fans loved Woody. it may not be a HoF type thing, it's just how much he meant to the organization. i dont think itll happen.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago White Sox
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Toledo Rockets
Wood's 20 K game was great, but all the love he gets baffles me.

Sure he had a great couple of years before the injuries and some good years in the pen, and it is nice that he's a cool guy, and does stuff for the city, but a lot of athletes do that for the cities they play in.

This would be like Sox fans going nuts over Jon Garland or Blackjack McDowell or something.

1. FirstTimer is not my idol, though he is a great poster.

2. You spent like 10 pages claiming that he only got 20K's because the ump needed to go...

3. For the record, my IQ is 135.

And I was never here in my young teens, I joined in my mid teens. Nice try.

Was that a joke?.

FT does a pretty good job of breaking down why Cubs fan feel the way they do towards Kerry. If you aren't part of the fanbase, I can understand why it is hard to understand, but don't begrudge us for appreciating a guy that was great at his peak and a guy that wanted to be part of this organization.

So there was a presser today for Kerry Wood. I think it was on Comcast. Does anyone know if there was a replay link for that?

It's actually more akin to the Sox retiring Aparicio's number or building a Harold Baines statue.

...wait...

Aparicio is in the HOF. I don't think there is an issue with a team retiring a HOF number, which is part of my rationale to not retire Wood's number.

My point is that he shouldn't be in the HOF with an 82 OPS+, but that's probably another discussion.
