Well, the NHL investigated Hossa and Pronger and deemed Prong's contract okay and he was signed to 43...what's another year...considering the dinosaur played 7 games with Atlanta last year.

Jersey will also have to make room before the season starts to add him at a caphit of 6.

Langenbrunner/Rolston have to be gone now.

BTW, a mod needs to fix the title.

They way the NHL cap works is that no matter what the player is being paid per season the cap hit is the average salary, so in this case his cap hit will be around 6 million every season. They front loaded the money knowing he will retire before the end of his deal so his cap hit does not hurt the team as much. So Kovalchuk essentially gets the 10 million a season he was looking for and New Jersey benifits by lowering the cap hit.

Only players 35 and over that sign a deal will count toward the cap every year, even after they retire.

Ya im aware of this. Similar to Hossa's deal in that he wont play the duration of it

This is bullshit. Yes, it's completely a cap circumvention contract, but if the league was going to step in they ought to have stepped in earlier ea Hossa's deal.

Or for that matter: a couple of those Detoilet contracts...

Nvm. First reaction is an overreaction on my part.

And if Kovy likes his deal the union will grieve...and will certainly have ramifications for the Hawks and the NHL down the line.

I think the NHL is finally drawing the line on the issue. Hossa's deal it not near as badly front loaded as Kovalchuks or not near as long. Compare the two and yes they both circumvent the cap but Kovalchuk's deal is like Hossa's times two.

Ok, that was my initial reaction until I really delved into his and comparable contracts.

I agree...Hossa was certainly obvious circumvention, but he never dips under a mil.

Kovy has 5 years at 550k; which makes it blatant.

I really hope this doesn't turn into a pissing match and the union starts fighting every perspective cap circumvention. Would you like to see Huet on the roster and the moves made to accommodate him?

If this deal sticks some how, in the final 4 years when he makes 500k, the devils will have to pay more because the price of a minumum contract will go up and they will have to adjust it.

If anyone in New Jersey had a brain cell, they'll be thanking the NHL for saving their sorry asses. The deal is horrid. They'll be taking an $11.5 million cap hit for 5 straight years starting in 2013...nice player, but c'mon. As Hawk fans we're seeing first hand how bad deals can screw up your roster. Even taking into consideration that the cap will probably rise.....

That deal is :turrible:

No they would be taking a 6 million dollar cap hit every year of the deal. He would just be paid 11.5 million his first few years. Your cap hit is (number of years) dived by (total contract amount)... it is an average.
