Keith would be considered in this conversation.

I'd leave Keith out of it. I don't believe that he took a discount, just that his cap hit is pretty damn low because of the ridiculously front loaded and long (in terms of years) contract that he signed.

Yeah Keith didn't take a discount, he took a super long term security safe contract

Hammer did take a discount as an apology contract though

Keith's contract has got to be one of the best value contracts in the entire league

Those two are criminally underpaid and largely the reasons why this whole salary cap hasn't exploded in the Hawks' faces. Neither of those guys tested the UFA market like Campbell is about to. I think he's going to get stupid money in a UFA offer somewhere.
I believe Campbell is around Hossa's age. I don't think it will be low but it won't be Subban money

That's what happens when you make $11million (I believe including signing bonus) in the first year of the contract...and $1.5million in the last year of the contract.

Keith isn't underpaid but his cap hit is certainly lower than it would be if he was signed with the new signing rules put in place a few years back. Money now is better than money later, especially if you can invest it wisely and even get a low return of 5-8% on it...it certainly adds up when you get that $11mil in year one and a whole lot more money in the years to follow.

Oh definitely not Subban money. But I wouldn't be surprised to see someone throw him $4 or $5 million in free agency, which seems crazy for a guy on the wrong side of 35, at least in my eyes.

A lot of action going on with Shaw via twitter today. Rumors out there saying he wants $4.5mil a year which certainly wouldn't work for the Blackhawks. Tracey Myers claiming a deal with Shaw is 50/50. Also, sources saying that FL has interest in him.

Should be an interesting night...

Max the Hawks could pay Shaw is 3mil AAV, but that means they can't upgrade the defense at all:

Panarin (.813) / Toews (10.5) / Hossa (5.275)
Panik (.875) / Anisimov (4.55) / Kane (10.5)
Schmaltz (.925) / Rasmussen (.575) / Shaw (3)
Desjardins (.8) / Kruger (3.083) / Hartman (.863)
Baun (.625)

Keith (5.538) / Seabrook (6.875)
van Riemsdyk (.825) / Hjalmarsson (4.1)
Gustafsson (.668) / Kempny (.925)
Svedberg (.75)

Crawford (6)
Darling (.588)

Buried: Rundblad (.1)
Retained: Scuderi (1.125)
Overage: (3.07)

Total: 72.948
Cap: 73
Space: .052

Panarin hitting his bonuses and the retained money on Scuderi is really killing the Hawks now. That's nearly 4mil of dead money. Just like with Saad, they're going to have to flip Shaw because they literally can't afford what he's asking. Replacing him with an AHL-level contract (.925) gives them about 2.75mil to upgrade the defense:

Panarin (.813) / Toews (10.5) / Hossa (5.275)
Panik (.875) / Anisimov (4.55) / Kane (10.5)
Schmaltz (.925) / Rasmussen (.575) / ??? (.925)
Desjardins (.8) / Kruger (3.083) / Hartman (.863)
Baun (.625)

Keith (5.538) / Seabrook (6.875)
Campbell (2.75) / Hjalmarsson (4.1)
van Riemsdyk (.825) / Kempny (.925)
Gustafsson (.668)

Crawford (6)
Darling (.588)

Buried: Rundblad (.1)
Retained: Scuderi (1.125)
Overage: (3.07)

Is there any way they could dump the Scud?

They already dumped him mid-season last year. His cap hit is retained money from the trade. There's no way to get rid of it now.

I like Shaw, but not at a 4.5 million cap hit for multiple years. Thanks for playing hard every night, may you have a good career.

He's in the last year of his contract and is making 2.5mil this year. In all likelihood he'll collect that and then retire after the season.
