I guess it comes down to an evaluation of the talent available at, say, the #2 pick vs the talent likely to be available lower down.Of course I chose the lower picks that turned out well, my point was there are many as good or better choices just like in the top 5. Lot's of misses in top 5 in these drafts I looked so they're not a guarantee either. I understand your point and you're correct but it wasn't the point I was trying to make in this case.
If you believe the player at 2 will be a dominant all-pro type, that would be the better decision. If you see almost equivalent talent further down, then go for it.
Since there is a better chance that the #2 pick will be gold, and more judgment would be required to sift through the lower picks, I think the ability of the decision maker should be factored in. Personally, I don't have a lot of trust in Poles, and might be inclined to stay with# 2.
