I haven't watched Letterman in years, but I'll watch tonight's episode. Back in the day, he was the funniest thing on TV.

Yup, in his prime nobody was even close. I also haven't watched in a while, but tonight was very cool.

Desbro, no joke or bit was aired without Letterman signing off on/adding/deleting whatever he wanted. He would also spend time every show with no writers, just the guests and his wit. Back in the day he usually nailed it.

You don't like him, that's okay. But for a while he was the best at what he did. Not many can say that.

That was a great show. They took thier time and it paid off. Classy and well done.

Like others have said, Dave has been off for a while, but he was on fire tonight.

Let me ask you this: is there a showrunner you're a fan of or see yourself becoming a fan of, like chris rock or, just perhaps, dane cook?

What's your favorite TV show?

The day I like Dane cook is the day pigs fly(Simpsons reference)

You can call me a bro, because weirdos on here think I am one, whatever's. But don't insult me thinking I enjoy Dane cook or tucker Max.

Give me Bukowski!

As for show runners, I don't really pay attention. I liked conans Walker Texas ranger skits,'so idk what to tell ya. I guess him.

Twats a joke. Chill.

I loved early conan and andy richter, but they didn't write all their own jokes either, 5 days a week -- it's an industry like any other. Look up conan's respect for letterman(before the leno nbc fiasco). learn some history, son

I still like a little Conan but yah his show was much better back in the NBC days or maybe it was just me at the age I was. That 12:30am time slot was huge for Letterman and Conan just because the censors were a little less up in their asses so they got to be themselves. Dave was still great when he initially moved to CBS and I think he took a lot of NBC viewers with him but it just fizzled out after a few years for me personally.

Conan when he first went to TBS was pretty good after the fiasco with NBC because I think he had something to prove. I still love Conans travelling shows. That is when he is at his best still. And the loosened censorship on TBS is still good for him but...yah there is something lost regardless. Maybe trying to hard to hit the college humor audience when that audience is finding their comedy online so the blueprint really isn't working.

Leno is just an unfunny ****. Always has been and always will be. Thanks to the over 60 demographic he did well. I find it amazing that anyone who was under 50 while Leno was on the air found any entertainment value out of him and his interviews were such ass kissing corporate shoe shinning garbage. At least Carson did it with some dignity and grace..Leno was just a fucking transparent asshole who rode off of Carsons viewers for years and years until they died off.

I don't want to get into Carson. I wasn't really "around" for his early time but I know everytime I was allowed to stay up late to watch I felt like I was watching something special for some reason. Liked his show as I grew a bit older but I was watching really to get to Dave. Seen the documentary on Carson after his death and its a pretty interesting life story.

I appreciate the writers. You got a weird temper sometimes man.

Thanks writers who wrote thelines!

LOL. Letterman was a writer. He obviously didn't write his entire show, but do you seriously think any of these guys don't write anything? I thought Letterman was boring, but you are seriously misinformed.

I didn't "get" carson until I was older, after he was done, and understood just how much of a marketing puppet Leno was, like Fallon is now.

Liked Carson, even as a young un. Always would rather watch Conan, that dude is funny as hell. Hated Leno, hated Letterman. Thought they were both boring.

I'm just saying I don't really care if a TV host is retiring.

The guy that says he doesn't care (somewhat on repeat) is still talking about the topic that he supposedly doesn't care about.

This day and age, late night shows aren't the best 10:30/11:30PM entertainment a person can get in this on demand world. So obviously, I don't consider late night shows the same staple in pop culture, as they once were. However, it's still great to catch clips of stunts and skits from time to time. They all come up with some good ideas that are worth watching.

That being said, I'm a fan of Dave. Sad to see him go, but at the same time, he has kind of over-stayed a bit as his star has faded. He's getting replaced by someone that should take a bite out of Kimmel and Fallon from the start. I like those guys too. Conan is great, but he's better in obscurity, so being on TBS is the best thing to happen for him.

I actually feel like for once in many decades, we're going to have the best line-up and late-night wars ahead of us. Especially now with the on-demand world and these hosts' awareness of it. Nobody is better than Johnny still, or even as good. But to see Johnny long gone and this level of talent on TV, I can live with that. It's the choice of line-up we have all been waiting for, and didn't even know we wanted. One can only hope they all don't turn into political agenda pumps, and focus on entertainment as well as finding new ways to make viewers laugh.

Without Dave, without the whole NBC fiasco(s, maybe that should be plural), we wouldn't have a lot of what we do see. Also, Dave built his writing staff over time, as well as the others. The whole, praise the writers thing, yes, they should get attaboys, but at the end of the day, you need to deliver and you need to be quick with your guests to keep viewers tuned in.

And I didn't like Leno on the Tonight Show. Headlines and Jaywalking were funny. But other than that, I didn't really care much. To add to the whole notion that things are for the best now, I DO like Jay Leno's Garage, I subscribe to his channel. It's a whole different animal, so as far as I concerned, that is a win:win as well.

I liked Tuesday's night episode better just because all the best Letterman shows had Bill Murray. I loved Letterman in the 80's, but that move to CBS did him little favors. Probably was the whole fiasco with Jay Leno that killed his spirit as well.

(Letterman should have gotten the job)

All the same...he did great things for network television by brining in all the comics and bands the Tonight Show would be afraid to touch and is a genuinely funny man.

Hope he enjoys his well earned retirement.

Never was a huge Letterman fan, but I'm a bit younger and perhaps missed his better days.

Fallon is by far my favorite. I think he's great.

My friends and I were huge Conan and Andy fans in high school in college. Hated Leno. So pandering to the older crowd.

Watching Conan nowadays make me so uncomfortable. Andy gets bigger laughs than him. I think his shtick is cashed. He's been bad for years now. Everything feels super duper scripted with him.

Conan was my favorite for a decade, now I'd rather watch Impractical Joker reruns when faced with a decision between the two.

Yah. I got home late last night and they run conans show on repeat late here and i did watch it. It was actually a really good show but he did something amazing. He told everyone watching to turn the channel over to CBS when Dave hit the stage. Actually demanded people do it. He also showed a clip of Dave coming on his show the first few months in and how Dave pretty much saved him from being cancelled. Pretty cool. Thats what i still like about Conan. I think with Conan its always depended on what guests he has. Some guests can really elevate hime..last night he had patton oswalt on and they burned it up.

Never been a fan but I watched a bit tonight. Thought he was extremely gracious. Very strange not having him and Leno around. Fallon seems like he's doing great and will carry on the tradition. I have little hope for Colbert.

Colbert is brilliant. He's going to make bland late night TV worth watching again.

This...a lot of the late night hosts now lean heavily on their skits, which is fine...they tend to be funny and keep things interesting. But whoever I am watching I will switch from after the first half hour when the monologue is done and the skits are done. Colbert is a great interviewer, when he was on Comedy Central, his interviews were phenomenal, so for those who say that it's all about the writers (which he gives credit to) in the interviews it is more Colbert. I can't wait, he is going to kill it.
