Yeah, my Netgear is a totally redesigned hardware revision that only had one firmware release, 2 years ago. Some bullshit.
In general I was wondering if the DD-WRT increased functionality like wireless signal strength or stability. And it seems the answer is not, so I will probably not use it on the Asus unless I run into a problem.
For some routers, it can give you those options. Increase transmission range, the clock speeds. All of these things will cause the router to use more power and generate more heat, so you just have to make sure you don't keep your router in a warm place to begin with. Some of them handle high temps well, it really depends on so many factors. DD-WRT and OpenWRT give you more functionality, and the 3rd party firmwares can improve stability issues. It's basically just an embedded linux distro designed for routers, borrowing on how Cisco releases their own linux distro for their routers.
