Yeah, my Netgear is a totally redesigned hardware revision that only had one firmware release, 2 years ago. Some bullshit.

In general I was wondering if the DD-WRT increased functionality like wireless signal strength or stability. And it seems the answer is not, so I will probably not use it on the Asus unless I run into a problem.

For some routers, it can give you those options. Increase transmission range, the clock speeds. All of these things will cause the router to use more power and generate more heat, so you just have to make sure you don't keep your router in a warm place to begin with. Some of them handle high temps well, it really depends on so many factors. DD-WRT and OpenWRT give you more functionality, and the 3rd party firmwares can improve stability issues. It's basically just an embedded linux distro designed for routers, borrowing on how Cisco releases their own linux distro for their routers.

Looking at the ddwrt and tomatoes forums, people praised the Asus merlin software for actually being pretty damn good for stock. A few on one of the forums didn't even bother to install ddwrt or tomatoe, so I didn't either.

I just got the ASUS RT-N66U and set it up the other day. I haven't really done anything but set the wireless SSD and passwords and update the firmware. But so far, so good. We'll see.

The interface is really nice and intuitive imo. It only took me about 5 min to set up. And the changes go through very quickly. Unlike with my Netgear where it took like 30 sec+ to reload the interface every time I changed something.

I decided I didn't need the AC66U since the 450mps N is plenty fast enough and I use LAN when gaming anyway. Also it seems like the AC66U firmware isn't as mature yet and more people are having stability issues. As far as I can tell, the N66U is the new tank as far as routers go.

Don't forget to screw on the antennae that come with it.... lol I was getting a shitty signal 10 feet away from the thing... 30MB off a 50MB connection.... put them things on and got 58MB off a 50MB connection on wifi upstairs when the router is downstairs.... that'll teach me

Hey quick update. My PC kept disconnecting repeatedly. I updated the wireless card drivers and even upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1, renewed IP address, fiddled around with power settings...ect. In the end I came across something that reminded me to check the firmware on the router. After doing the update I haven't been disconnected.

This router is so great that I never suspected it to be the culprit. It's back to normal now.

I had a wifi router in 2001

 And I wasn't an early adopter at that time, I was at least 3 years late.

Update -

Since I got my ASUS RT-N66U 7 months ago, I have not had to reset or power cycle it ONE TIME. Not once. ****** is a tank. I have 3 computers connected, a ps3, and multiple mobile devices come and go from my house. I have never had a connectivity issue, no IP problems, and just in general have not needed to **** with the router at all once it was set up. I haven't even logged into the dashboard in like 6 months.

I got that router too for when I moved into my new house in September...I haven't touched it since initial setup.

Same here.... I think I got it shortly after you did.

I only unplugged it once to move it up to my office.

update on the N66U

Mine finally shit the bed. about 2 months ago, the power toggle stopped working.

looked it up, apparently its common for the mechanism that physically holds the button down and completes the circuit to break. Its possible to fix it properly, but it didn't seem worth the time so I just super glued the button down. It worked no problem.

today tho, the whole thing went dead. seems like its not receiving power. Could be related to that switch, but I kinda don't thing so. When I unplugged the power from the unit, some of the sheathing came with it. Seems like there is some deterioration inside there. My guess is deterioration in the power connection or circuitry due to heat.

Sucks cause I had this thing 5 years and only had to cycle it a couple times.

Guess I am on the hunt for a new router now.

I bought an ORBI with satellite. It Works well for a two-story 2800 square-foot house.
