update on the N66U

Mine finally shit the bed. about 2 months ago, the power toggle stopped working.

looked it up, apparently its common for the mechanism that physically holds the button down and completes the circuit to break. Its possible to fix it properly, but it didn't seem worth the time so I just super glued the button down. It worked no problem.

today tho, the whole thing went dead. seems like its not receiving power. Could be related to that switch, but I kinda don't thing so. When I unplugged the power from the unit, some of the sheathing came with it. Seems like there is some deterioration inside there. My guess is deterioration in the power connection or circuitry due to heat.

Sucks cause I had this thing 5 years and only had to cycle it a couple times.

Guess I am on the hunt for a new router now.

I upgraded to the Asus RT-AC3200

Been good for about a year and a half.

Have had to cycle it or the Comcast modem like 2-3 times the past year, not often.

I ordered an RT1900 (68U) for $100

I just hope it works well. I don't know what it is about the wireless market that it seems so hit or miss

Good luck with what you have. Networks in 2019 should not be that much work for most people.

I converted to a built up a pfsense setup since this topic died. Learning curve up front, but as reliable as it gets IMO, no caps, no gimmicks, no gamer-talk hyping up nonsense/ non-existent benefits. Just pure performance and control that can be upgraded as much as a person desires. If you or anyone ever thinks they need to DIY a router project, I'm happy to help or point someone to the right direction(as there is a lot of misinformation out there too).

I bought an ORBI with satellite. It Works well for a two-story 2800 square-foot house.

I have the Orbi as well with a single satellite that I put downstairs. I have a rock solid connection throughout our house but it also reaches out to the middle of the back yard which is great because we have a deck out there. 25 up/350 down everywhere...

Just got Google Wifi which basically sets up a mesh network. My house has very thick walls and steel so I always had trouble getting WiFi all throughout the house and to my Nest cameras but so far this Google Wifi does the trick. Newer version also acts as a speaker so can use it to control your smart home using Google Assistant.
