Malik Hooker Out 4-6 Months After Two Surgeries

Updated Feb. 1, 2017

Every year in the NFL Draft, there are some top prospects who are held back by injury during the pre-draft process. This year, one of the top talents in the 2017 NFL Draft will be in that category, as WalterFootball.com has learned from NFL sources that Ohio State safety Malik Hooker will be out 4-6 months after having hernia and labrum surgery.

Given the timetable of his recovery, Hooker won't be able to participate in the field workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine and may not be able to conduct other workouts later in the spring for teams prior to the draft. Thus, sources say that Hooker's combine medical recheck weeks before the draft will be very important for teams to gauge if there could be any projected impact on his availability for the start of training camp.
Hooker was one of the breakout players in college football in 2016, as the redshirt sophomore totaled 74 tackles with 5.5 for a loss, half a sack, four passes broken up and seven interceptions. He returned three of those picks for touchdowns in his first season as a starter. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder impressed evaluators with his natural skills as a single high safety and his ability to be a game changer in pass coverage. Hooker is atop our NFL Draft Safety Prospect Rankings.

At this time, the injuries don't appear to be threatening to his rookie season, so his draft stock may not see much of an impact from these surgeries. Multiple teams have told WalterFootball.com that Hooker has received high first-round grades, so even with these injuries, he may not have a long wait to find out his NFL home on Thursday night of the draft.

Safe to say he won't be an option at #3 and there will be some team late in the 1st who will take a chance on him.

I think you are. He performed at a very high level with these injuries. They will now be fixed and he shouldn't be worse for it. He'll probably drop a bit due to not wowing scouts in work outs but he jumps off of tape and will be ready for camp. I think there would be more concern if these were the type of injuries that would limit his range or dynamics but they are not. He may drop or not but if he does, it will be considered great value and not taking a chance.

exactly what Pickles said

if he checks out health wise he will still be taken in the top half

Might make a trade down to 12 or so more viable for me. Right now, I suspect we trade up before we trade down. Trubisky is going top 2 and the Jets have a hard on for him. If we don't, that's awesome for Pace but if we do, I suspect we'll need to move up for him after Trubisky lights up the combine. He's going to surprise folks with his #s there.

I still lean towards DEF at 3 and would still take Adams or Hooker (especially Hooker) before Allen

A trade down would be Ideal but is hard to make happen with so many ???? about all the QBs, maybe somebody gets a huge crush on Fournett and want to skip Jaguars

Ideal bears draft would be Hooker or Adams and the come back in the 1st and get Mahomes II, but i think he will go MUCH higher than people think at this moment (like top 20)

Jaylon and Myles dropped significantly last year due to injuries. Different injuries for sure, but damn it would be sweet to get a QB at 3 and Malik in the 2nd.

these aren't even compareable

Jaylon will probobly never be the same and Jacks knees probably prevent him from a long life in the NFL

Hooker will go top 15 probably top 10

Safety is a deep position, so I really don't care. Rest assured, Hooker's not going to be picked at #3. No way Pace can draft an already injured player in the first. The fan base and media would explode.

I didn't said that pace would draft him at 3. I said I would.

for once it would be nice to not just have a warm body at a position, but to have the DUDE and would I see when looking at Hooker he can be the DUDE
and if the medicals check out fine I would draft him at 3 in a heart beat

sounds like a perfect 1st round pace pick

Sounds like theperfect bitching fan situation.

If Pace passes, he missed on Ed Reed v2.

If he picks him, fans ***** that he took an injury prone player "again". ( nvm that neither White nor Floyd were injured before the draft).

Perfect scenario for the professional second-guessers.

Alright so maybe not late 1st but the kid is going to drop if he can't workout. Probably 10-15 range.
