Sorry, DaaBears, I know you were close to your dog and feel for you.
Had to put down my own dog years ago. Had thought it would be a calm merciful end after seeing him throw up so often and failing to even eat when being fed by hand as I had to do for the last several months after he got sick. Incredibly sad day.
One of the weirdest things I'd ever seen was with my best friend's dog that died recently. He was an older dog and my friend had pointed out this huge hole he'd been digging. The dog had access to the back yard through a dog door. Later that same week, when he got home from work, the dog didn't come to him so he went looking for him. The dog had dug his own grave and lay down in it to die.
