Pretty simple is Matt Garza an all-star this year?
be careful what you say, oblivious is hard at work looking at fangraphs looking to spank us with FIP and K/9

:lmao: at your sig and this post. You contradict yourself. Is he an all-star? No. Should he be? Yes.

That's much better.... I just don't see how he can...no one can give me an argument where I would say he is.
he is not.
again. allstars dont get in by just k/9 and they dont get in because of FIP, FIP is not a statistic. funny how he uses that as his arguement.
Yeah, technically the coaches and managers who choose the pitching staffs will only look at ERA and stuff, but if you were a GM, you'd use other evaluators such as FIP to more accurately gauge what a pitcher can do. However, looking at Garza's career FIP versus this season's FIP so far makes me think that this season is an anomaly rather than the norm.
I think more teams are looking at other metrics that are not well known to us. Sierra is where its at if we are looking at NON stats.
CO is the only one who thinks Garza is. I actually think he does this for attention and wants to be in the minority. He always is...
A lot of teams also have proprietary metrics. FIP is just the most well-known one because it's pushed by FanGraphs and FanGraphs is more easily accessible. FIP doesn't really tell the whole story though, because you also have to look at how hard the balls that ARE put into play are hit. I'm too lazy to look it up but I'm sure Garza's been giving up a fairly good amount of line drives. Also from my scouts' eye view checking the Gameday pitchf/x stuff, he leaves balls up in the zone a lot and those tend to get killed. He's been lucky so far in not giving up a lot of homers but I think the regression monster will come back and bite him soon.
I still hate the trade, btw.

Just because a season is an anomaly (I agree Garza's probably is) doesn't mean they don't deserve an all star bid (not saying Garza deserves one).
Regardless should he be an all star? No.
Has he been our best player? I think so.
CO was just in the mindset that our best player should get the all star nod, which really isn't right.
The most interesting player in Chicago is going to be Paul Konerko IMO, but with Adrian Gonzalez taking a large lead in the ballots I think Konerko will make it as long as they take three first baseman.
