I would be foolish to limit a 1st round pick or picks that way. If when your pick comes there is a position player that is a better player than the best pitcher than that's who you take. It's OK to target pitching, it's not Ok to take a lesser player because of some sort of dogmatic approach.

I'm divided on that. One side believes in the best talent on the board because they are also trade weight. That is how I view Allen. The 2nd pick has to be the best arm on the board.

Neither pick will affect the team right now. So they have to go with the "best" talent.

This is not the NBA/NFL where a draft impacts the next year. Not to mention drafts are advanced gambling. Where the magic happens is in development. That is where you take the most talent.

Now I get if they pass on a guy with issues. Or another looks like he will commit to college. It is a gamble for them too and a HS edu limits. A free ride through college is impactful.

So I'm thinking they will pass on players that are question marks even if there is more talent there.

Well, CJ Edwards was a 48th round pick, so anything is possible. Yeah, I know, if he went to college and played a few years he might have gotten picked sooner.

Who are we trying to replace as a fielder. Nobody. What room is there in the lineup for a spray the ball around hitter, none. It should be all pitching.
Come 2019, they can have 2B SS LF CF open..

Lots of things can happen by then to these players..
Injury, trades, or just plain never quite get it going as an everyday player..

But this particular player I'm hoping they can draft, don't even need to be ready by then ...

I just feel they need to add a few of those type of hitter over just drafting guys that just bombs away into shifts..
Hopefully Almora and Happ will be those type of guys that can stay in lineup..

Personally I hope they focus on 6'3"+ pitchers that either have a fastball 95+ with work to do on secondary. Or throw low 90's with plus secondary. But bigger guys that create that downward plane.

I'd be surprised if they didn't look to draft bigger guys. If you look at the 2016 draft it went down like this

3 - 104 Hatch 6'1" 200
4 - 134 Tyson Miller 6'4" 195lbs
5 - 164 Bailey Clark 6'4" 220lbs
6 - 194 Chad Hockin 6'2" 210lbs
7 - 224 C Michael Cruz
8 - 254 Stephen Ridings 6'8" 220lbs
9 - 284 Duncan Robinson 6'6" 220lbs
10 - 314 Dakota Mekkes 6'7" 250lbs
11 - 344 Micheal Rucker 6'1" 185lbs
12 - 374 Trey Cobb(did not sign) 6'1" 190lbs
13 - 404 Wyatt Short 5'8" 180lbs
14 - 434 Parker Dunshee 6'1" 205lbs
15 - 494 Jed Carter 6'0" 190lbs

In the first 10 rounds Hatch was the smallest guys but at 200 lbs he's not really small even though he's on the short side. Rucker is smaller but at that point you're talking 340+ players picked. It's less about size and more about tools. Vast majority of the guys are well built if not well built and tall.

Speaking of the above list... I'm curious to see what Stephen Ridings does presumably in short season A ball. He's yet to play so I guess they figured he wasn't ready for full season A. Hatch they started in A+ some what surprisingly. That's a decently quick step up as they shut him down after a long college world series. Tyson Miller is in A ball and pitched in Eugene last year. Bailey Clark pitched for Eugene last year but hasn't thrown this year. Chad Hockin pitched in Eugene and is in south bend this year. Same story on Duncan Robinson and Mekkes. Micheal Rucker is all the way up to A+ after a strong start. Wyatt Short is in south bend. Parker Dunshee also didn't sign. Jed Carter pitched in Eugene last year but hasn't pitched in 2017.

So, given all that I'm not 100% sure what the deal is with Ridings. Baseball america's stat page said he was hurt which would explain why he missed Eugene but i'm having a little trouble figuring out what the injury was.

Ridings said he agreed to a $120,000 signing bonus and for the organization to pay for the last two semesters of his schooling. He plans to finish his degree in chemistry and then attend graduate school.

Pretty strange arrangement. He wasn't in the top 1000. Cubs took him 254 and are paying for his chemistry degree/letting him finish school. Guess he would be done right about now and should pitch in Eugene when that season opens. That doesn't even get into graduate school which I'm guessing will continue in the off season.

They don't count that degree into slot money so effectively the cubs can underslot players that will take money this way which is seemingly what happened. I don't think that has anything to do with why he hasn't pitched though. Typically people complete degrees in the offseason or post career.

I was thinking this was a underslot deal with the diff covered in College costs that is not counted towards the draft.

Well tonight it begins.

Man looks like twins went for a value deal in Royce Lewis. Reds apparently get the best pick available if they want it.

Edit: looks like they went for Hunter Greene. Guy throws 102 and may also be a 1st round caliber SS. Good get for cincy.

Well through 14 picks between now and the cubs but man I'd love if J.B. Bukauskas keeps falling.

Well astros just took Bukauskas :-/ Oh well suppose it was too much to hope for him to fall. Jeren Kendall is also falling but I can't imagine he makes it to the cubs.

I'm updating the above list as people get picked off. Looking like the cubs will have a large choice of pitchers but Jeren Kendall would be pretty interesting. I didn't expect him to fall this fall but he is a potential 5 tool CF. There's some worries he wont hit though so I assume that's why he's falling.

Guess the more position players taken as we closer to Cubs 2 picks , the better it is for cubs to get 2 good pitching choices with their picks
