This poses some interesting moves.

I would think that LaStella gets the call up. Not sure who it will be out of the pen.

Would love to see Edwards get a chance.

Probably be Schlitter though.

Edwards is on the 7 day dl for a blister. He is coming off right before September call ups and is supposed to be called up then for the bullpen. I would love Baez up.

Losing Soler is going to sting a bit. His slash is .279/.352/.369 in the last 30 days and LaStella is still a bit of an unknown and certainly not a run producer. He'll need to have a high OBP to stay in the lineup for long. If run production is down this week expect to see Baez get some playing time when he comes up with the September callups.

I'm not that concerned about losing Motte. The bullpen has been a patchwork quilt all year long.

I want LaStella and Baez up, and Herrera sent down if I had my choice.

Coghlan could platoon in RF with Denorphia.

Either way, it should be interesting to see who they bring up.

LaStella may not be a run producer, but I will bet that he will make contact and not strikeout, and he also has a real good eye at the plate.

If he does that I think they'll be ok and they'll have the right handed Baez option to supplant Castro some in a week. They should be fine.

What happened with Soler and how long is he expected to be out?

Chicago Cubs: Jorge Soler and Jason Motte to DL; Tommy La Stella called up

Jorge-Soler-ST.jpg

And just like that, half the Chicago Cubs roster is hurt. Not really, but on a day that saw the Cubs sweep away the Atlanta Braves for their fourth --fourth!-- four-game series sweep of the season, there was little report of anything negative out of the North Side beyond groin tightness for shortstop Addison Russell --resulting in a "day-to-day" diagnosis. It turns out Russell's injury was the least concerning of the day. Outfielder Jorge Soler is expected to be out a month with an oblique strain, and pitcher Jason Motte joins him on the disabled list with a shoulder strain.Motte has struggled in recent weeks, which the injury may or may not account for, but Soler had started showing signs of improvement at the plate. In August, Soler has a line of .284/.372/.388. He's still not slugging where the Cubs ultimately hope he will, but the .372 OBP is looking better and better. Long-term picture not withstanding, it's unfortunate timing for Soler to get hurt --for he and the Cubs both.[caption id="attachment_39442" align="alignleft" width="272"] Tommy La Stella should add a strong contact bat to the Cubs' lineup[/caption]What this*has*done is allow for the long-awaited return of*Tommy La Stella, who is battling back from a seemingly-eternal oblique injury of his own. The Cubs offense unquestionably takes a hit with Soler heading to the DL, but La Stella isn't a meaningless piece of roster filling, as the Cubs lineup will seemingly benefit from La Stella's penchant for making contact --only 106 strikeouts in more than 1,200 career plate appearances across the minors and majors. Zac Rosscup has also been called up to replace Motte in the bullpen. The disappointing*thing*is that you hate to see the Cubs have to change anything given the tear they're currently on: 20-5*since being swept by the Philadelphia Phillies in late July. The Cubs currently sit twenty games above .500, and hold a six game lead for the second National League wild card spot.

Son of a *****. The only positive is that we will get better defense at second because La Stella and Castro will be there while Coghlan occupies RF. I'm glad Motte is no longer here, as shitty as that sounds lol

Bad timing for Soler, he was just starting to hit again. . Hopefully he will be back by end of Sept. to get some AB in before playoffs. .

Obviously Cogs goes to RF with Denorfia going against LHers..

Interesting to see if Maddon goes to Castro at 2B full time or LaStella against RHers..

For a big, strong guy....Soler is pretty brittle. Wasn't he also hurt in the minors delaying his getting to the big show?

I haven't really read up on this news as of yet but I would point out that only players up before Sept. 1 are eligible for the playoffs so in some ways this is a plus because it essentially gives them 2 more guys to choose from. I feel like we might seem some roster moves this week around getting a few more guys playoff eligible.

Baez starting at third tonight.

Interesting, maybe they are thinking Bryant in right. Coughlan back to second. The Cubs face Bum and Kershaw. Thats tough. Schwarber is cooling down and they may want to protect him from tough matchups.

I'd imagine they just want to keep him fresh around the infield as it's unlikely he starts if they call him up for the playoffs.

Thought it had been previously stated that the rule now reads anyone on the 40 man is eligible for post season.

I could be wrong but my understanding was you still had to be on the active roster prior to sept 1.
