Sucker Punch - I would not recommend this film.

Mars Needs Moms - This was okay. If you have elementary school aged kids, worth a look.

I loved it. The story may have been a touch weak, but stylistically this was one of the more visually engaging movies I've ever seen. Not to mention the soundtrack just fit every scene perfectly.

This was based on a graphic novel wasn't it? The jumps between "reality" and her distorting her own reality were a bit hard to follow. The 1st time I just said what the ****, how did we go from a mental hospital to a burlesque show/theater? I gave up as it jumped to a dojo, WW1 like trenches, Fatasy castle seige with dragon ect... I guess if I had read the graphic novel, and knew the story before hand it would have been easier. The hard to follow plot couldn't be overcome by the action and scimpy costumes IMO.

You know I don't think it was based on a graphic novel... I think it was just supposed to give you that feel. I can understand how it could have been confusing - I actually caught a lot more things the second time through (although it sounds like your first viewing wouldn't really warrant an additional one for you). I think I found the whole idea of escaping into fantasies within fantasies to avoid dealing with sexual abuse in the real world an interesting take.

I know a lot of reviewers found the movie pretty misogynistic, but I really didn't experience it that way - of course, being of the male persuasion, my opinion on that may not be as valid.

Kevin Smith announced his retirement after Hit Somebody

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/02/10/kevin-smith-says-that-hes-retiring/

I loved Kevin Smith's movies, even the ones that supposedly sucked I loved. Chasing Amy was supposed to be his worst film and it is one of my favorites.

I can't explain it but I "got" his movies I really connected with them. Sure Jay and Silent Bob was about as deep as a puddle but besides that Clerks, Clerks II, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jersey Girl were great flicks for me. I liked Zack and Miri a lot too.

Not by a long shot! Mallrats and then (mostly) Jersey Girl are well considered to be his "worsts" - he was close to being an Oscar contender for Chasing Amy. Generally speaking, I think most fans of his consider Chasing Amy his best.

It is a shame, but I can't see him sticking to this too long. Some project will come along or he'll get nostalgic and end up back at it in some way, shape or form. I'm still waiting for a wide-release of Red State (or at least on video) as I wasn't able to make the Chicago run when he came through.

I dont get the hate for Jersey Girl I thought it was a great movie. I haven't seen Mallrats in years. But the Whalers scene was great.

My main issue with Jersey Girl is that (in my opinion) he did the movie too soon after having a child of his own... it had a schmaltziness that I don't think his fans were really expecting.

The Interrupters, current playing at the Siskel Film Center.

Awesome documentary about CeaseFire in Chicago. I primarily covers 3 of the violence interrupters, but gives some notice to many of the others that are part of the CeaseFire project. Almost everyone that is part of CeaseFire are former gang members, murderers, etc. Basically formerly crappy people who have realized they had very wrong pasts and are trying to use their cred, even legendary street status, to prevent violence and change the culture they grew up in. The lengths they go is just beyond incredible and just makes me gobsmacked.

This is a totally see it, do not pass go, documentary, IMO.

I'm a Siskel member! Isn't it an awesome place to catch very small films? Anyhoo, tickets to this have been TOO hot and hard to come by so I decided to wait until they bring it back for a return engagement for one week in October. Can't wait.

I have to agree, chasing amy was probably my favorite. I dont know many movies that tackled the subject matter in there. The whole guys not being able to handle a girl with a crazy ass sexual history when they dont have one of their own. Its so completely true too. I think i would have the same reaction to finding out a girl I been dating fucked her whole highschool and got fingercuffed among other things, no matter how perfect for me I thought she was.

Mallrats is probably my second favorite, it was the first smith movie I saw when I was in highschool. At the time I was obsessed with comics and all my friends and i did in our off time was hang out at the mall, I think i had half the posters on the wall of my room brodie did in the movie.

Then clerks, then Clerks 2, dogma, jay and silent bob. I mean all of my favorite movies of his come from the jay and bobverse. While I dont think he had anything to do with it, Fanboys was a funny ass movie and jay and silent bob are in it for a cameo. "Yeah what'd I tell ya, sweet and womanly".

Watched part of an old movie from 1962 called Eegah. OMG it has to be one of the worst movies ever made. It was the kind of cheesy movie like they would make fun of on Mystery Science Theater, only worse. It was about some giant 1000 year old cave man that falls in love with some teeny bopper chick he comes across in the desert. That guy that had the metal mouth in those James Bond movies played the Cave Guy. There was this hideous teenage boy that thought he was a singing idol and was always singing songs about Vicky and Valerie to his girlfriend, but her name was Roxy. Don't waste your time. I wish I had that 30 minutes of my life back.

Bri, hun - MST3K did do this movie. I recommend looking for that version.

Yea I love the place, and glad that it is coming back. I think this should have a much wider release. It is that good.

Now that I live closer to downtown with easy access to everything I have been looking for things like this to be a member in in order to be more active around town. Theaters, concerts and other membership based activities and events. I take it you both suggest Siskel as one of them?

That'll be for you and the Mrs. to decide. You should check out the site. It's a very active website and they send almost daily information via email if you elect to get it. They chock their calendar full every month. I personally think it's a worthy donation---I mean, members still have to pay to see films but they're discounted to $5 and of course members can go to their special events too. I like the small, intimate theaters and also that you can get a cup of joe or booze too, heh. They take very good care of it and really, it's ideal because it's right on State across from Marshall Field's and is therefore a breeze to get to on weeknights after work or on the weekends via Red Line. I have seen a nice amount of documentaries (and some theatrical films too of course) there---true, these are all docs that will become available on Netflix but it's still good to support a film organization and throw some actual patron money and ass-in-seat attention to these films sometimes IMO. It's always good to be reminded that there's still TRULY "indie" independent films out there---not "indie" mainstream like at Landmark Century or Pipers but sub-sub-mainstream like they show at Facets, Siskel, and Music Box.

I love MST especially the one where they go Damn Bumpus's Dinosaurs. I saw Eegah on TV and that goth chick with the big boobs (Elvira) was making comments. When we watch those kind of movies we kind of become our own MST commentators and make snarky, witty comments. I would think you and jakp would be great at that.

Him and I don't actually see a lot of movies in the theater together for that reason. It gets irritating to other patrons and our friends.
