Never did get the zombie thing. Aliens are interesting. We probably have a couple on the board.

One thing I don't like is how TV shows can in my opinion, bastardize a genre or style. Take zombies for instance, that used to be a cool relatively unique thing. Thanks to The Walking Dead I probably don't wanna see another zombie movie ever again, and it's probably impossible to get one green lit anyway now. TV series can easily over-saturate the market.

All true.

I was going to list all the zombie movies and TV shows that have been and are currently being made since TWD started, there are literally too many, I don't feel like wasting my time.

I knew you would never accept that.

In the decade leading up to The Walking Dead we had 28 Days Later and it's sequel, Resident Evil, Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead and it's sequel, and Zombieland. All were major releases. In the decade following The Walking Dead, so far we've had World War Z and Warm Bodies. Two projects that were in the works before The Walking Dead even came alone.

So by your count 2? Oh yeah, "the decade following TWD"? Try 6 1/2 years, 10/31/10 to 3/17, not a decade, weak effort.

Of course I have to list all the crap imitators to prove the genre lives. Pro tip, they don't imitate shows people don't watch.

The Walking Dead, October 31, 2010
iZombie, March 17, 2015
Z Nation, 2014
Fear the Walking Dead, August 23, 2015*
In the Flesh, March 17, 2013
Zombie Apocalypse, October 29, 2011
Death Valley, August 29, 2011
I Survived a Zombie Apocalypse, February 15, 2015
Town of the Living Dead, October 7, 2014
The Plague, 27 November 2016
Last Road, 2015
Dead Sunrise, 2016
The Undead, 2015
Death Walks, 2016
The Rezort, 2015

I count 14, 9 in the last two years. Yes the genre is really dying out. BTW of the shows on that list, your personal favorite, *Fear The Walking Dead is the only one I've seen, and it kinda sucks. I would guess they all probably suck, anyone feel free to correct me. So now we blame Star Wars for all the bad rip offs that came out after it? That is fucking stupid.

Bolded for drama queen.:drama:

You mean shitty TWD knock offs like FTWD can over-saturate the market. Don't blame the hit show for crap trying to ride it's coattails.
Your irrational hatred of TWD has been a source of amusement for some here, I used to get a kick out of it. Enough already, it's coming off as desperate and pathetic now. Find another hit show to rag on. Game of Thrones is coming back soon, so chin up.

If anything, the genre was a bit tired for this generation, and TWD may have helped extend it a bit.

How so? I'll do this again...

2002 - 28 Days Later
2002 - Resident Evil
2004 - Dawn of the Dead
2004 - Shaun of the Dead
2005 - Land of the Dead
2007 - 28 Weeks Later
2009 - Zombieland

Until 2010, we never went two years without a major zombie film being released. TWD premiered and since then:

2013 - World War Z
2013 - Warm Bodies

I prefer movies. Part of it being the experience of going to the theater, the other part being I'm pretty picky with tv shows. And in most cases, I think TV shows go on for longer than they should and then become stupid/grow stale. That's part of the beauty of Breaking Bad, they could have easily milked that and instead they told they're story and went out while it was still in its prime.

So I guess this is as good as a place as any, or I guess it can be moved to the TWD thread, but:

What in the hell is so good about TWD? I've only seen the first season and the first two episodes, the ones directed by Darabont, were excellent. The rest of the first season, in my opinion, was just okay. I thought the Telltale TWD games were better...

So I have to ask, with the so-so acting, and what I assume to be what, 5 seasons of new ways to dodge zombies, what keeps people coming back?

Edit: Especially as others have mentioned above, with TV in a sort of golden age at the moment, it's even more surprising that TWD is as high up as it is.

This is a great point. With Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and Better Caul Sall as sure fire picks and only 2 slots remaining, one could easily argue that The Walking Dead isn't even a top 5 show AMC show.

On networks like FX and HBO, it wouldn't even crack the top 10 shows of the past few years. The same goes for Netflix.

I don't even know any serious person or publication that even goes to bat for the show. It basically gets 0 attention from any prestigious awards or list, and rightfully so.

I am a big fan of the "movie" type series on television. I am a Game of Thrones junkie, for example. I also loved Deadwood, Boardwalk Empire, of course the Sopranos, and currently Black Sails. Where television has gone is amazing in terms of its special effects and screen writing. I remember the old Flash Gordon series so it has made some tremendous strides in my life-time.

Worst comeback I have seen in 6 1/2 years, or as some call it a 'decade'.

Thanks to The Walking Dead I probably don't wanna see another zombie movie ever again

Back on post #5 of this thread I called this 'the golden age of television' because of HBO, Showtime, FX, I'll add some of the other Premium Channels to the list.

AMC does not make that list for me right now. They are home run hitters but their average isn't great, right now I watch 4 shows currently in production, only BCS and Preacher are great shows. In the past they had great shows, but they are gone, enjoy the re-runs.

Top 5 current watchable AMC shows, can't find 5 so here are 4:
Better Call Saul
Preacher
Halt and Catch Fire
TWD

All time AMC shows, (all great) in order:
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Better Call Saul
Preacher
Rubicon

I would also put Halt and Catch Fire ahead of TWD. Fear the Walking Dead has only one passionate viewer and he posts passionately right here about 'his show' as he likes to call it.

That show got my attention for personal reasons. The fist season had late 1970's hardware engineers in short sleeve polyester shirts and weird beards, you know nerds. I was one of those, so nostalgia. Also the rift between hardware and software. BTW they nailed it, so I was hooked.

My wife hated the show at first, but likes it now, I'm the opposite, I think it's a soap opera now.

The genre was tired at that point. Meaning, despite whatever came before it, audiences of the generation were losing interest. It's silly to blame a successful TV show for the demise of a genre.

Do you have anything backing this up?

Here's an easy way. How many shows/movies came out in the 7 years of TWD?

Also, why would a successful TV show stop others from making movies/shows in the same genre? It didn't stop space shows and movies when Star Trek was on.

Did True Blood in 2008 kill the Vampire/Supernatural genre?

I mean, look what came after, Twilight!

I think Zombies got popular again because a few things happened to occur at once. We got a great zombie-ish movie (28 days later), a really good zombie movie (Dawn of the Dead), and some really great zombie video games all pretty close together. Tie that in with how good World War Z (the book) was and there you go.

I really love The Walking Dead, but I'm also not big into the Zombie genre. So there is my bias laid on the table.

That being said, if you have one successful show, that doesn't mean other shows in the same genre aren't allowed to be good. I'm not sure I understand the correlation. If anything, the genre was a bit tired for this generation, and TWD may have helped extend it a bit. Like I said, I'm not a big zombie genre fan so take that as an outsiders observation at best.
Same here, and agreed with TWD. I watch because at least they make it interesting. The whole feudalism angle they are taking this season interests me to no end.
