Swimming.

Morning and evening stretching, the cat etc.

Sleep on your back. Or sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees.

Experiment with your diet. Reduce red meat. Try eliminating tomato, reducing grains, etc. Monitor it, and see if anything makes a difference.

If the pain gets unmanageable, consider OTC anti inflammatories like Ibuproffen or naproxin. Last course of action is the precription NSAIDs, but the side effects can be horrible.

FTR, I was diagnosed with spinal arthritis (ankylosing spondylitis) at 26. I have managed the pain well, take no prescription drugs, and still work a somewhat physical job.

Tens is great for flare ups, but is a temporary relief. You need to change your lifestyle a bit.

I was a pain free person until about three years ago and I had a pretty bad back incident.

All my lower lumbars decided to bulge at once. Not degenerative as far as I know, but went through the normal pain doc stuff got epidurals and took a bunch of pain meds.

What got me through all that stuff was a couple of things.

1. Physical therapy - Mainly focused on Core strength, Core strength is what helps hold your back in place.

2. learning proper posture - I got some information from an acupuncturist about this book and it really has changed my life especially the sections on sleeping and sitting (I am in an office at work) My fiance loves the walking portion (She is a nurse and walks all day) https://www.amazon.com/Steps-Pain-Free-Back-Solutions-Shoulder/dp/0979303605

3. Help from professionals - Whether it be finding a good chiropractor, massage therapist, and acupuncturist (Lots of shitty ones) All these people have helped me in one way or another, whether it was with physical realignment, muscle relaxation, or releasing nerve pain. Can be expensive, but most of these folks I am finding are covered under insurance these days.

Hope this is helpful.

Don't let it **** with your head hbk. Try to accept it and adjust. It can bum you out sometimes to the point of depression, but it isn't worth going there.

Cortisone should be a last ditch effort to relieve severe pain. Don't do it too much.

Just realize that the shots and the meds are temporary. They aren't fixing anything, they are masking it for a moment.

Sometimes you can use that you get you over a hump and get to a better place physically, but ultimately relying on that will not give you long term relief.

Scotch. Lots of scotch
Beer. You can keep a buzz going for hours without getting too drunk. Weed always made my pain worse. Had to quit smoking for a few years when I was really busted up. Don't take vicodin ever. I got hooked on it and when I decided to quit it was 4 terrible days of withdrawal. Doc was pissed, said it could have been bad for me. Told him taking that shit for years wasn't good for me either and I wasn't going to take a new drug to get off the old drug. If you need surgery do it. Good luck buddy.

That means you're doing it wrong.

I was hooked on vicodin once too. I was doing in a few days what people get in a month. Yeah, the withdrawal sucks because it's physical, not mental. Best way to do it is slowly ween yourself down on the daily dose to the point where it won't hurt to go cold turkey, because it does fucking hurt when you're doing 10-15 pills a day and suddenly stop.

Anyway, muscle relaxers help. You don't get high so there's nothing to get addicted to, at least for me.
